Improvisational pianist Mario Mattia continues to develop a deeply personal and exploratory musical language that exists somewhere between contemporary classical music, jazz improvisation and spontaneous composition. Rather than approaching improvisation as display or variation, Mattia treats it as a form of real-time architecture, shaping long form musical ideas through instinct, harmonic intuition, rhythm and emotional atmosphere.

His recent work has increasingly focused on the relationship between sound, abstraction, visual identity and spontaneous creation. With works such as Origin, Invention, The Unfolding Field, and now Abstract Boogie revealing different dimensions of his improvisational world.

In this exclusive feature, Mattia discusses the creation of Abstract Boogie, the tension between rhythmic propulsion and abstraction within the performance, and the visual language he has developed around his improvisational practice, including the symbolic Möbius imagery that connects his various musical forms.

The result is an artistic approach that is completely unique: grounded in the spontaneity of performance whilst also reaching towards something more immersive and deeply personal.

Tell us the story of this track. Why did you choose to visualize this it specifically in this way?

Abstract Boogie began spontaneously in my studio. It was not a preconceived composition, nor was it something I had planned in advance. I was recording in the moment, and the piece emerged from a chromatic, boogie-derived left-hand pattern that immediately took on a strong physical momentum. From there, the improvisation developed naturally, with the right hand moving in a more abstract, technically active direction above that driving foundation.

What interested me was the tension between that insistent left-hand engine and the more abstract, technically active right hand that emerged above it. It is not traditional boogie-woogie, but rather an improvisation that uses the rhythmic drive of boogie as a foundation for something freer, more chromatic, and more contemporary.

The visuals were chosen to reflect that intensity – the motion, pressure, and forward propulsion of the improvisation. The occasional glimpse of me at the piano is there to remind the viewer that this is a real-time performance, not something assembled or constructed afterward. I wanted the video to feel immersive, energetic, and slightly unstable, much like the music itself.

What was the inspiration behind this new video (visuals, storyline, etc.)?

The inspiration was less about creating a literal storyline and more about finding visuals that could reflect the internal energy of the improvisation. Abstract Boogie has a restless, driving quality – the left hand keeps pushing forward while the right hand moves in a more angular and unpredictable way – so I wanted the video to feel active, intense, and somewhat abstract.

The imagery is meant to mirror that sense of propulsion and tension rather than explain the music in a narrative way. I was drawn to visuals that had movement, contrast, and a slightly unstable quality, because that seemed closest to what the improvisation itself was doing. The occasional image of me at the piano gives the viewer a human point of reference and reinforces that this was a spontaneous, real-time performance.

What was the process of making the video?

The process began with searching for visual material that felt compatible with the intensity and motion of the improvisation. Because Abstract Boogie has such a strong physical drive, I wanted imagery that had energy, abstraction, and a sense of forward movement rather than anything too literal or decorative.

From there, I incorporated my abstract Möbius image, one of three Möbius images I use as visual signatures for the different improvisational areas I work in: meditative (blue), abstract (magenta), and freeform (green blend). Each image has its own distinct color identity, corresponding to the character of that particular genre. The meditative works tend to suggest stillness, depth, and inward motion; the abstract pieces are more angular, chromatic, and unstable; and the freeform improvisations are the most open-ended and exploratory. For Abstract Boogie, I used the abstract Möbius image because its color and visual character represents the intensity, tension, and unpredictability of the performance. The occasional images of me at the piano serve as a reminder that, beneath the abstraction, this is still a spontaneous real-time performance by a single musician responding in the moment.

I assembled and refined the video in DaVinci Resolve, working with the pacing, transitions, placement of images, and overall visual atmosphere until it felt aligned with the music. The goal was not to create a conventional storyline, but to build a visual environment that followed the momentum, intensity, and unpredictability of the performance.

About Mario Mattia

Mario Mattia is an improvisational pianist and graduate of the New England Conservatory whose work is rooted in spontaneity, deep listening and emotional presence. Drawing on influences ranging from Johann Sebastian Bach to Keith Jarrett and Brian Eno, his music bridges classical, jazz, progressive and ambient traditions.

Each performance is created entirely in the moment, without predetermined themes or structures. While his primary work centers on solo piano improvisation, Mattia also maintains an electronic studio practice that serves as a parallel and occasional extension of his explorations in sound.

Working from his rural studio, Mattia captures every nuance of sound, inviting listeners into immersive, contemplative spaces where music unfolds as lived experience.

With her single “Con C.ALMA” and accompanying video, Amana Melome’ continues to create a space that is both deeply personal and quietly powerful.

“Con C.ALMA” is more than just a song. It’s a reflection of her philosophy on creativity, presence and moving through life at your own rhythm.

Filmed in the flower lined streets of Southern Spain and in her own creative studio, the video captures the calm, colour and intention that define this new chapter of her artistic journey. Rooted in themes of self-trust, patience and inner alignment, “Con C.ALMA” feels like a gentle invitation to slow down and reconnect both with ourselves and with the world around us.

We spoke with Melome’ about the symbolism behind the visuals, the spontaneous process of bringing the video to life and why flowers became the central metaphor for this beautifully unhurried release.

Tell us the story of this song, why did you choose to visualize this song specifically in this way?

Con C.Alma is a song about doing things on your own way at your own pace, without letting the world rush you. 

I felt flowers were very symbolic for the sentiment behind the song. You can’t rush a flower to bloom, and you can’t expect one flower to be exactly like another either! Just like people!

The intention was to create a video that felt elegant yet simple, colourful and calming like sunshine.

What was the inspiration behind this new video (visuals, storyline, etc.)?

I intentionally inserted flowers in all of the visuals for this song! I made a wire flower for the cover of the single, I am wearing big flower earrings in the video and I am walking and dancing around the beautiful flower lined streets of Andalusia in Southern Spain. 

There is a softness dancing with the boldness of the images, a calm and colourful sultry meets don’t mess with me vibe hahaha! I thought after waltzing around these beautiful streets, orange trees and fountains, ending up in my studio was the perfect ending to the story line.

Lighting my candles and painting, with flowers in my hair. This is my actual studio where I paint and record music, so it encapsulates my essence in a perfect way!

What was the process of making the video?

I had the vision of the vibe I wanted to create, and called in my good friend and amazing makeup artist Kirsten (shoutout to @kirstenpromakeup) who is always game to get creative together! 

I pulled the clothes and accessories from my closet. Once I explained my vision, she found a walking map of the flower-lined streets in the area, and off we went! 

2 iPhones in hand and a tripod! We walked through all of the areas, I sang the song through once (sometimes twice) at each, and we kept it moving. Once I left her, I drove to my studio…and it hit me:  that could be a perfect closing scene! Super unplanned I filmed all of the studio images by myself! Opening the door, to lighting the candles, to painting and dancing in the mirror. I was just imagining fun edits…and I happened to have two big white flowers in my studio (the last of a bouquet gifted to me on  my birthday a few days before).  I chose my favorite clips and the rest is history!

Slow Burn Elegance – Lil’ Red & The Rooster Shine on Latest Single “Melancholy Mood”

Lil’ Red & The Rooster slow the pace and turn up the elegance on “Melancholy Mood,” the fourth single from their forthcoming album 7.

Bobby Floyd’s B3 organ swells beneath the track with a soulful subtlety, while Jean Marc Despeignes (bass) and Pascal Mucci (drums) keep things locked in with a hushed, heartbeat rhythm section that lets the emotion breathe.

As part of 7, “Melancholy Mood” feels a lot like a candlelit centerpiece. A moment of reflection that invites listeners to lean in closer. It’s not just a love letter to classic blues, but a confident entry in that lineage, re-imagined with the Rooster’s signature “retro modern” touch.

Stacked with Swagger – Lil’ Red & The Rooster Deal a Winning Hand with “Stack ‘Em Up Baby”

Lil’ Red & The Rooster’s latest single “Stack ‘Em Up Baby” is a whole vibe. A low-slung groove with a wink in its eye and a strut in its step, the track oozes vintage soul and playful cool while bringing something unmistakably fresh to the table.

From the opening piano flourish, you are unmistakably dropped into a smoke-filled jazz lounge where every note has purpose and every phrase is dressed to impress.

In this Exclusive Interview, we talk with Molly about the story behind the song, the creative process behind the video, and how a spontaneous trip to Spain – and a crash course in video editing – helped bring it all to life!

1. Tell us the story of this song, why did you choose to visualize this song specifically in this way?

This song is about the idea that even in strength, we all need someone to lean on. Old habits can creep back in, but finding grace, truth and sometimes a shoulder to lean on can help one rise above. I decided to visualize the song in black and white because I wasn’t sure how to allude to the overall feeling any other way. I found a way to add color and added it at the pinnacle moment of the song to heighten the level of visuals to match the song. 

2. What was the inspiration behind this new video (visuals, storyline, etc.)?

The song was written in the summer of 2023, just before my car accident.

Ironically, the test of strength was thrown my way and the message of resilience and hope proved to be just what I needed to get through it. A little over a  year after the car accident, my husband and I took a celebratory trip from time healing and we went to Spain.

We were both inspired and took lots of video footage in hope to create a video at some point. I wasn’t sure which song the footage would be for, but it presented itself when I started. This song is the first single, to be released May 16, 2025. The footage that we gathered seemed to tell the story I was looking for and so I just went for it. 

3. What was the process of making the video?

The process was a bit tedious, considering I was/am fresh at learning Premiere Pro.

In fact, I just got it 3 days ago and have SO much to learn. I initially created the video in imovie. I sent it to my friend, who is a professional filmmaker, and she set me straight, in a loving manner. It took me 2 days to make it once I sat down and loaded all of the footage into my project. I guess because I have experience in imovie and also Pro-tools, the learning curve came a little bit easier.

Thanks to Youtube University (HA), all of my questions were answered as I went along. I’m sure I could have kept going with perfecting it, but decided to let it go, especially because there is a deadline. Also, the realization that I’m a musician just trying to get my song out to the world. I am not a professional videographer. It’s similar to producing and recording a song. At some point along the way, there comes a time when nothing more can be done with the tools at hand, and you have to let it fly.
