Remember hearing about the awesome festival taking place on NYC’s Governers Island on June 18, 2011? Well, in preparation for this inaugural event, the Governors Ball is very excited to announce their 2011 artist interview series. Over the next few weeks, they will be rolling out interviews with artists performing at their festival. First up is Gregg Gillis, a.k.a. Girl Talk! He discusses how he wants his audience to “lose their minds” at his shows and how he always aspires to “musically engage” his live audiences. But enough of my blabbering, you can see the interview for yourself right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09_uRy29BHg&feature=player_embedded
Almost lost in the SXSW shuffle was an appearance by Jack White and his newest project.
No, not a new band but a mobile record store! The Third Man Rolling Record Store debuted on last Saturday, with an appearance by Jack and his newest record label signee, Seasick Steve.
White humored the amassed crowd with a brief, two-song performance (Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” and the White Stripe’s “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground”) before giving the impromptu stage up for Seasick Steve.
After the brief concert, fans got to tour the Rolling Record Store, with its reinforced vinyl racks and the interior and exterior sound systems. Coated in Third Man Records trademark yellow and black, the truck looks both brand new and retro.
Jack sat down to an interview with Pitchfork which you can see right here. Below check out both White and Seasick Steve’s solo performances.
Noah and the Whale just released their third album, Last Night On Earth, this week via Mercury Records. And you may have already seen their video for the song “L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N,” but you can now view a live performance of “Give It All Back,” which Charlie Fink, the band’s frontman, says is about “the infatuation you share with your friends for the bands and music you love. Music you feel so passionate about that you’re prepared to humiliate yourself in front of everyone you know.”
Damon and Naomi, two artists who have worked collaboratively and independently since the 80’s including the band Galaxie 500 are releasing another album together, False Beats and True Hearts coming out March 17th on their own label, 20/20/20. For a single off the album, “And You Are There,” they enlisted artist and filmmaker Chris Marker to provide the visual accompaniment to the track. You can’t really call it a video because it is a single still image and a pretty literal interpretation of the song’s concept as articulated by Naomi in Wired Magazine, the host that premiered the audio/visual partnership. That idea being losing oneself in and being consumed by a memory. That notion is close to Marker’s creative mind as his film La Jatee was the inspiration and catalyst for Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys and likewise for Damon and Naomi’s new musical work of art.
Junip has teamed with Jose Gonzalez to embark on a huge North American tour, including a stop at Bonnaroo.
