Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Bring “Downtown” to Life; and Get Eric Nally Out of Hiding

macklemore

As many know I’m not a fan of Pop-esque music. It has to strike me pretty hard to attract my attention in any shape or form; and rarely does it ever. I know I am about 10,000 years late to the party that is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t 110% intrigued by their latest single, “Downtown.” It’s good; I mean really good.

Not only does it feature some of rap’s greatest MCs, but to boot it brought back to life Eric Nally of Foxy Shazam fame (who I had interviewed years ago for Greenshoelace.com ), which up until recently, I could never understand how they never really caught on. They were successful in indie circles, but even then, they never fully received the attention they deserved. Also I kind of love the fact that most people think Eric is in costume, but really, no, that’s his usual attire (for live shows at least). Remember when he used to eat cigarettes on stage? Yes, that.

Getting back to my main point, I love the fact that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are being successful on their own terms, and keeping completely true to themselves. It really brings in another level of artist intimacy because there isn’t that label middleman. Everything that they put out is them, whether you like it or not. “Downtown,” is the perfect example of an artist unleashing their heart and soul into the music. Musically and marketing wise it’s genius; and to be honest, one hell of a song.

A New How-To from Make Out

Make Out is a new exciting pop collaboration consisting of former Junior Senior member Jesper Mortensen and step daughter of New York Dolls’ David Johansen: Leah Hennessey along with Portland, Oregon native/music veteran Olivia Alminiana on drums and Anders Christiansen on bass.

Make Out is a refreshing diversion from today and recent years’ music trends. Instead of experimental soundscapes or conceptual lyrics it’s just fast, sexy punk and pop rants. The new video for their first single “I Don’t Want Anybody That Wants Me” is nothing but four young, hot, colorfully clad guys and gals rocking out behind vibrant floral images, harkening an early 90’s MTV aesthetic.

Make Out just played the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan on March 16th and 17th with The New York Dolls, sure to be a raunchy, high energy rock show. Their debut EP, How To, was just released February 22.

Band of Horses Cover The Replacements “Can’t Hardly Wait”

The Replacements have always been a band near and dear to my hear. Paul Westerberg is a true poet and writes some of the saddest songs known to man.  This week indie Gods, Band of Horses, who just released their new record Infinite Arms (Brown Records/Fat Possum/Columbia), decided to try their hand at playing a cover of “Can’t Hardly Wait.” Yes this is one of the most well known Mats songs so I can only imagine the pressure was on. Band of Horses claims it was their first time playing the song, and boy did they nail it. Talk about having the ability to make a song even sadder sounding. The band played the song live on Columbus, Ohio’s CD101.1FM radio station.

Watch it below, or download it. As far as we know we’re the only one who has an MP3 of it right now. Sneaky, eh? Enjoy.

New Blitzen Trapper Song, “Heaven and Earth”

Blitzen Trapper is slowy heading back into action as Sub Pop and the band just leaked their newest track from the upcoming Destroyer of Void due out in June. The song titled “Heaven and Earth,” is nonetheless beautiful and haunting at the same time. What really stands out is the piano and singer Eric Earley’s voice. I’m not sure if there is much more I can say about this song, you just have to listen for yourself….and I suggest that you do.

Vampire Weekend Appear on MTV Unplugged

Gone are the days when MTV airs their Unplugged performances on TV. Of course we’re in an indie rock renaissance and as all of our favorites hit the stage the only way we can see them is over at MTV’s website. The most exciting Unplugged of, well maybe ever, is the one that the hottest band around right now, Vampire Weekend just filmed. The band took the stage to perform six songs, new and old with an orchestra and a very intimiate crowd. This is every Vampire Weekend’s fans dream, and hey, even if you’re not into the band, it’s time to start. How they’re able to pull off their songs from “Cousins” to “A-Punk” acoustically, so beautiful, is truly an amazing experience. This gives us a taste of what the band is going to provide on tour this time around, and it looks good to us. Move over Grizzly Bear. Someone is stealing your thunder this year.
