Kevin Spacey Fights Cassettes Won’t Listen

Most people would be flattered to have an album titled after them. Well, apparently actor Kevin Spacey is not one of those people. Jason Drake also known as Cassettes Won’t Listen originally planned on naming the record after the insane actor. Spacey has slapped Drake with a a cease-and-desist order, of course after several thousand copies of Kevinspacey have been printed. The album will now be called Evinspacey…umm clever? It will drop June 21st on Daylight Curfew records. This is Drake’s second cease-and-desist order, as he also got slapped with one in 2008 for the Guns N’ Roses and Ludacris mashup “Ludacris Democracy.” Cassettes really won’t listen.

The Killers to Record New Album

It has been a long while since we heard new music from The Killers. Years down the line they are still going strong as one of the biggest buzz bands out there. We had to wait it out for a bit as singer Brandon Flowers and drummer Ronnie Vannucci embarked out on solo projects. The hiatus is now over and Vannucci hinted to The O2 Evening Show that The Killers are in the midst of working on a new album. The record is still in the early songwriting stages as the band is slated to start working on the new material this week. Fans will still have to wait a little while before any of the tracks get released though. There is nothing recorded yet, just in the works. Ah the torture. Check back for more upcoming news on the yet to be written record.

The Rosebuds to Tour Following Album Release

The Rosebuds duo, Ivan and Kelly, emerge from their last record, Life Like, and the end of their marriage to start anew with the release of their fifth album, Loud Planes Fly Low. With this new release, they have a chance to use their breakup to express themselves musically and artistically and it should prove to be an interesting change of pace. The track “Second Bird of Paradise” is a sexy, moody song with gorgeous strings and keyboard. Those components together with the soft vocals recall Home Video’s sound and style. Listen to “Second Bird of Paradise” on their website and look for Loud Planes Fly Low on Merge Records out on June 7.

Oberhofer Announces US Tour With Neon Indian & Sleigh Bells Including Dates With Cults, Eternal Summers & The Beets

This is what you need to know about the band Oberhofer: they sound fantastic. The 7″ they just released (“Away Frm U” / Dead Girls Dance”) is phenomenal. The guitars wail as though they are looking for release from this world, the drums are amazing, the entire sound is like nirvana for the ears. The lyrics do leave something small to be desired. Maybe it stems from Brad Oberhofer’s age (he is 19 after all), but the text-language spelled track names rub me the wrong way. The only redeeming quality to these lyrics is the way Oberhofer sings them. There is such an air of sincerity in his voice that you almost forget about the words themselves. Almost. Then again, I was that kid who sat and poured over lyrics so perhaps I am a bit jaded. Either way, this band sounds incredible live. There is so much energy and passion in these shows that you can’t help but fall in love with them. So, here lies the Oberhofer recipe to success. Record some badass songs in your parents basement in Tacoma, WA. When that house burns down, shake the loss off and move to New York, find a new band with an incredible sound and start shaping your art. See this band live. Do it now. Album Review: Javelin – ‘Canyon Candy’

While Canyon Candy is a far cry from the hip-hop electro Javelin has bestowed upon us previously, it’s not something to miss. Inspired by the rolling tumble weeds and red clay encrusted jeans of the Wild West this brief album brings back snippets of that the Frontier used to be.  Word is that this is the future soundtrack of an upcoming epic of the same name, directed by Mike Anderson.  Previous fans of Javelin may be turned off by this album, it’s not electronically inclined and if anything, sounds vintage.  However, Javelin’s master-sampling and melody-making skills were not missed.  The album maintained a melodic sway the whole time, with twangy steel guitars and wavering vocals in replacement of synthesizers and funk samples.  With most of the songs finishing between one and a half to two and a half minutes, one of this album’s qualities is certainly brevity.  As soon as one song begins it suddenly seems to end, sometimes a bit too quickly.  The use of samples in tracks such as “Strawberry Roan” and “Trembler” creates an authentic western sound, and adds to the overall reminiscent feel of the album.  At the same time, tracks like “Colorado Trail,” and even “Strawberry Roan,” incorporate a little more of the beat that Javelin is known for.  Javelin incorporated some western instruments too, I’m pretty sure I detected a steel guitar, and did I hear a jaw harp in “Love Gulch?”  Standouts on this short album are “Estavez,” “Colorado Trail,” and “Streets of Laredo.”  If you’re a Javelin fan who is open to an album unlike any of its predecessors, pick this album up.  You’ll be amazed by their versatility and willingness to experiment. Available April 16th, 2011.

Sam Roberts Band To Release ‘Collider’ May 10th

Sam Roberts Band announced they will be releasing their latest album on May 10th. The album will feature the song “Longitude” with Land of Talk’s very own Elizabeth Powell. The song is perfect to zone out to which is great if you don’t really want to listen to music, but then why are you playing a fucking song. Ms. Powell’s vocals were my only lifeboat to get me through that song. Other tracks on the album are fantastic, however. My advice, skip “Longitude” and listen to “The Last Crusade” and “I Feel You.” These tracks have great melodic variety and interesting lyrics. You’ll forget that “Longitude” ever played in your headphones. The band will be hitting the road May 16th to promote Collider. Tour dates below.
