CMJ 2010: Playtime! & Candid Band Photos

We have TONS of our Playtime! sessions to post in the coming days, but what we love to do is catching bands in the action of playing these private little performances. Yes catching the amazing shows of your favorite up and comers and old favorites is a highlight of CMJ, but there is nothing more thrilling than getting the inside scoop of your favorite artists straight from the source.

….more to come…..

Playtime! : Jukebox the Ghost “Half Crazy” & “Beady Eyes on the Horizion” @ McCarren Park, Brooklyn

Friday morning during CMJ we were lucky enough to have the pleasure of filming Tommy from Jukebox the Ghost. Originally our plan was to film by the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn, but as it was super cold that afternoon, we headed over to McCarren Park where he played us two songs on his banjo. Playing “Half Crazy,” and “Beady Eyes on the Horizion,” this was possibly my favorite moment of CMJ 2010. Take a peek at the videos below. You sure don’t want to miss out on these!

Jukebox the Ghost Rocked the Delancey at CMJ

Jukebox the Ghost tore the roof ….Well, the basement of the Delancey playing a daytime party for SneakAttack  Media and Steve Madden music during CMJ 2010

These guys take rocking  keyboard grooves and amazing songwriting and bring pinching energy to their fans. Right away from the start of their set, the band got the crowd going with awesome piano beats and strong guitar licks. There were alot of day parties and regular showcases going on during CMJ , but being up front you could tell all the college radio DJ’s were in the front of the crowd  paying attention to these young rockers. I hate making comparisons when talking about bands, but these guys have the same gusto and fan appeal as 90’s rockers Ben Folds Five.

I see big things from Jukebox the Ghost in the next year or so.

Make sure you pick up their newest cd “Everything Under the Sun” on Yeproc records.

The band will be touring  the rest of 2010 with dates with Guster as well as Barenaked Ladies.

Jukebox the Ghost Gets A Little Schitzo

It was only one week ago that Jukebox the Ghost released their sophomore album, Everything Under the Sun. But, the video for their second single “Schizophrenic” has already made its way online. Like Everything Under the Sun‘s first single, “Empire,” “Schizophrenic” features a distinct piano melody. In fact, it has two!

Says lead singer Ben Thronewill of the track, “Years ago I learned that often schizophrenics become schizophrenics in their early twenties after a traumatic experience. So the song is from the point of a schizophrenic who still has the wherewithal to talk coherently about his illness. Secondly, the song was born of the two piano melodies of the verses that were both technically very difficult to play and which, after I learned them, screamed ‘schizophrenic.'”

The video plays with the song’s theme in a clever manner, but also employs the use of TVs in an extremely cliche way. All the same, it’s definitely worth checking out down below.

Remix Fridays!: Jukebox the Ghost – “Empire” (Freelance Whales Remix)

Jukebox the Ghost releases their second record, Everything Under the Sun, (Yep Roc) next week and believe us, this is going to be one of your favorite albums of the year. The indie boys of Freelance Whales decided to take their hand at remixing one of the tracks titled “Empire,” putting a whole new twist on the song. If you’re a fan of either groups this is a must listen. Hell if you’ve never heard of them before, then give a listen to what you’ve been missing out on!
