New York City Popfest 2009

Its getting on that time of year again when the NYC Popfest invades the area. The lineup, like past years, is nothing less than awesome. The event takes place from Thursday May 14 to Sunday May 17th, which ends as an all day event at NYC’s Cake Shop (we love that place!).

Amongst the bands performing this year are Casper and the Cookies, Pants Yell!, Burning Hearts, The Icicles, The Radio Dept., Boy Genius and more. The Friday night show at Don Hill’s and the Saturday night show at the Bell House will also have an ‘Indie Dance Party’ after the bands play. Hey, even us indie folks have to dance sometimes, right?

We’ve already got our tickets and are most excited about seeing Georgia’s own Casper and the Cookies on Sunday night. Little factoid for you; Jason Nesmith the singer and guitarist of Casper used to play in Of Montreal.

And speaking of Casper and the Cookies, if you want to be involved with something exciting that afternoon send us a message or comment. We could use your help. Its going to be an afternoon of filming fun. (secret for now but we’ll let it out eventually!)

Video: Datarock “Give it Up”

Datarock is one of the most bizarre acts out there. Dance poses and red suits are the first thing that comes to mind upon hearing their name. Immediatly following that comes the thought of how great of a band they are. Different, yes. Brilliant, totally. Datarock is due to release ‘Red’ on 4/14 and have just released the video for the first single, ‘Give it Up’.  The video involves nothing more than a crazy dance off, for once making dance competitions seem cool.

Video: The Gay Blades ‘O Shot’

Sometimes when you hear a new band, they just hit you in the face with their musical power. This is the case for indie duo, The Gay Blades. Made of up two guys, Clark Westfield and Puppy Mills are currently residing in New York City where their music has really exploded. The band, not wanting to fit into a certain genre have labeled their music as ‘Thrash Pop,’  for they claimed they are more of a mixture of indie with a dab of punk and a helping of pop. Try to get that down if you will. Nonetheless, another band that is going to be big in 2009.

Okkervil River on The Late Show

Wednesday night, indie buzz band Okkervil River stopped by the Late Show with David Letterman. Okkervil is one of the few new acts that are living up to all of their hype. They have it all together.

It has been a while since we’ve seen such a brilliant television performance, or any sort of live performance as amazing as Okkervil River performing ‘Pop Lie’ the other night. The band was so into their vibe that singer/guitarist Will Sheff didn’t even noticed he broke a guitar string while playing….but maybe he just didn’t give a damn. Kids, there is going to be a lot more Okkervil River talk after this performance, so be prepared.
