Christopher Paul Stelling Tackles A Classic and Closes Out 2010 With A Bang

History is important. Looking back can put things in perspective. Taking a deep gaze towards at a timeless track from the 1800’s, New York City up and coming songwriter, Christopher Paul Stelling, along with singer Julia Marie Christgau throw their version of the classic, “Motherless Child” into the pages of history.

Directed by John Alberico, the duo filmed their “Motherless Child” rendition in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park in a video highlighting their harmonies and the depth of this powerful song.

Have a look/listen at Stelling and Christgau’s video version of “Motherless Child” and if you’re up for it, here’s a little journey through the classic song’s evolution. Take a listen to the renditions of this amazing song, including one of the best-ever versions of it, by the inimitable man himself, Lou Rawls.

You can also check out two new tracks free from Stelling: “Flawless Executioner” and “Strange Darkness” and catch his last live performance of the year at Rockwood Music Hall’s Stage Two on December 20th.

The New Odd Couple: Jaime xx and Gil Scott Heron

2010 saw a rise to fame for frontman Jamie xx of The xx and a return to prominence for fusion artist Gil Scott Heron. After a 13 year hiatus from music, Heron released I’m New Here to mostly rave reviews, while Jamie saw equally positive reviews pour in for his band’s debut album, xx.

Now, the pair are teaming up for what is sure to be one of 2011’s most intriguing releases. Less of a collaboration than a reinterpretation, Jamie plans on taking 13 of the songs Heron recorded during the I New Here sessions and twisting them into a new body of work. Entitled We’re New Here, the album is set to be released on February 22nd.

The first single from We’re New Here, “NY is Killing Me,” was released earlier this week and is currently available for download HERE. You can also peep the video down below.

Tame Impala Give Abby May Remix Treatment

After months in the studio, Australian born Abbe May has emerged with a whole lot of material. Sporting a new band and an even darker rock sound, May released the first single from her forthcoming album in October. The song, entitled “Mammalian Locomotion,” recently received remix treatment from Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker and Cam Avery. I’m not sure the remix really improves on May’s song, but we’ve included it down below for your listening pleasure.

The Pierces Release “Love You More”

the pierces

The Pierces, a New York based band composed of Catherine and Allison Pierce, are definitely doing a good job creating hype for their upcoming record. Their lead single, “Love You More” is a clear continuation of The Pierces’ style of dark lyrics and themes but at the same time you can hear how country has become inspiration for the sisters.  Top of the line producers such as Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman and Grammy Award winning producer Rik Simpson are now working on their upcoming album. The sisters also collaborated with Matt Romano from Little Joy and Albert Hammond Jr. from The Strokes, which will definitely provide more of a rock feel to their tracks. The still unnamed album was recorded in Coldplay’s studio in London and in Electric Lady Studios in New York City. Now there are visuals to go along with the lead single, as the Pierces released a music video to “Love You More”. This Tarantino-esque clip takes us to a desert where the siblings drive around and get revenge from an old lover, like a pyromaniac version of Thelma and Louise.
