Stephen Malkmus Talks to Pitchfork about The Jicks’ Future

Though Stephen Malkmus seems in denial that a Pavement reunion will ever happen, at least his future with The Jicks is stable. Malkmus recently did an interview with Pitchfork talking about the near end of the Pavement reissues, The Jicks in general and the dreaded ‘So when is Pavement going to reunite?’ question. 2009 actually marks the 20th year anniversary of Pavement’s first EP, ‘Slay Tracks (1933-1969)‘. Its so hard to believe they started that long ago….though Stephen Malkmus, you’ve never looked so young.

Video: Pains of Being Pure at Heart, “Young Adult Friction”

We always love a good Pains of Being Good at Heart Video, and their newest for ‘Young Adult Friction’ takes the cake as our favorite so far. The video has a nice homemade look to it. Save the frills for someone else please. The overall feel of the video makes it feel like it was shot in the 70’s, and the singing skeleton is quite a nice touch. You can tell the band had a great time making this video. You’ll have a great time watching it as well.

Sufjan Stevens Sings About Sofia Coppola

Over the weekend Sufjan Stevens shared with the world that he is very nostalgic. Stevens came across a few old demo tapes of his from college and decided to share one of them with the world. The title? ‘Sofia’s Song’, which is literally a song about Sofia Coppola. This borders on flattering and weird, but you can already tell that he was brewing something special. Equipped with banjo he came up with the song claiming that Sofia was his ‘imaginary confident’ when writing songs in his early days. I guess everyone needs to be inspired by something. The tale of his name and early music career was posted along with the song on his label, Asthamatic Kitty, along about the journey of his songwriting process. This is a great listen and read for any Sufjan fan, obsessive or otherwise.

Bound Stems, ‘Happens to Us All Otherwise’

In the past 24 hours, I have become completely obsessed with the Chicago five piece called The Bound Stems. A band that I have discovered on an itunes Podcast of all things. Its really easy to become increasingly interested in this band, which I hate to say, broke up last year after their second release ‘The Family Afloat.’ Sad to say the least, but the band played Lollapalooza, Daytrotter, and South by Southwest amongst other things. Disbanded or not, this is a band worth listening to. It reminds me a bit of Conor Oberst if he started writing really happy songs all the time.

Of Montreal Get Unplugged (Again) and Cover The Beatles

As much as I adore Of Montreal’s new songs in their original form, there is something about the feeling of Kevin Barnes and BP Helium performing the songs acoustically. We’ve been seeing this for a while from the band, as they are no strangers to these kind of performances. Every song they strip down just seems so beautiful and raw. Barnes and Helium have stopped by 89.7 WTMD and 90.7 WFUV (New York shoutout, what?) on the current tour to provide us with great versions of ‘Beware Our Nubile Miscreants’, a new song ‘Coquet Coquet’ and a cover of The Beatles ‘I’m So Tired.’ Of Montreal, is there no end to your greatness?

On a side note, I seem somewhat distracted by BP’s new moustache. Who isn’t?

Cage the Elephant ‘Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked’

Sometimes late night music videos capture my attention. Case in point, Cage the Elephant, a band that has been surrounded by a ‘great big buzz’ lately. The Kentucky five piece who started gaining attention in the UK before they even broke out here, have been making waves with their first single ‘Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked’. The tune sounds like the love child between The White Stripes and The Black Keys, both flattering comparisions. Blending a bit of soul and blues into their rock and roll vibe, Cage the Elephant is already on their way to being the next ‘big thing’.
