Noah and the Whale just released their third album, Last Night On Earth, this week via Mercury Records. And you may have already seen their video for the song “L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N,” but you can now view a live performance of “Give It All Back,” which Charlie Fink, the band’s frontman, says is about “the infatuation you share with your friends for the bands and music you love. Music you feel so passionate about that you’re prepared to humiliate yourself in front of everyone you know.”
Art Brut have recently made some plans, as bands do when they finish recording their 4th album. Brilliant! Tragic!, another Black Fancis-produced effort, will be released on May 24 with the single, “Lost Weekend” arriving May 16. The big news here is that frontman Eddie Argos claims that on this one he has finally learned to sing, which you can preview HERE. That’s the cover art above, and the track listing is below.

Glam rockers Of Montreal are set to release a special five song EP and art book on the same day – April 26th. Both EP and book are limited editions and you can currently pre-order them as a package deal (AND a shirt!?) by clicking on these links:
Now, for the details. The EP, thecontrollersphere, is being described as Kevin Barnes’ “folk album” (or, at least, the only way of Montreal could interpret one). The art book, What’s Weird?, is the debut from of Montreal cover artist David Barnes – Kevin’s own brother! The book spans David’s entire career and features his own captions that are being deemed humerous, yet introspective. Be sure to grab both fast as both Facebook and Pitchfork pre-sales have been through the roof!
Idiot Glee’s (AKA James Friley) tour is underway promoting his first LP, Paddywhack to be released on June 7.
“Happy Day” which can be downloaded on daytrotter.com along with other Idiot Glee songs shows us an artist who sings knowingly about about, well, not so happy days but the 60s California vocal style, the sleepy yet jaunty keyboard lines and even a “Bohemian Rhapsody” reference slipped in suggest some latent brighter sides beneath the dark in which he sings. The effective vocal looping and double tracking beefs up the somewhat minimal one man show involving just his voice and electronics, which on their own are already substantial, especially the former element.
Friley’s rendition of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” is fantastically creepy, avant-garde and respectfully soulful. Based on the few recorded treats he presently has available, Paddywhack should prove to be an interesting and pleasant surprise. Idiot Glee will be performing at SXSW March 16-18 in between upcoming shows around the South and the Gulf Coast.
