Brendan Benson Re-Releases “Lapalco”

When Brendan Benson released his sophomore album, Lapalco, in 2002, the album was met with a flood of critical praise. NPR called it “terrific,” Rolling Stone proclaimed it “as universal as the late night, semi-drunken answering machine message or the love note you never quite had the guts to send,” and The Onion said it was an “almost overwhelmingly assured sophomore effort.”

Now, nearly a decade later, Benson has decided to re-release the record via his website. Digital and Limited Edition Vinyl versions of the remastered Lapalco paired with bonus tracks are available at brendanbenson.com

In addition to overseeing the re-release of Lapalco, Benson is recording and self-producing his fifth full-length album at Nashville’s Welcome to 1979 studios. More on that as it comes.

Cassettes Won’t Listen Release ‘Evinspacey’ June 21st

Cassettes Won’t Listen, the one-man project of Jason Drake (partner and former director of marketing at the famed indie hip hop label Definitive Jux) announced the release of his full-length album Evinspacey. Known best for the single “Cutting Balloons” and official remixes of notable artists such as Aesop Rock, El-P, Midlake, Mr. Lif, Morcheeba and others, Drake’s track “The Echoes” mixes futuristic hip hop beats with his melodic vocals. The album itself is Drake’s nod to his new address (LA from Brooklyn) as well a musing on despair in the city. Summer and Fall tour dates for Cassettes Won’t Listen will be announced soon. Meanwhile, listen to “The Echoes” while meandering down the street and you will find yourself transported into a completely new world. A world you won’t need much convincing to explore.

Jonathan Mann’s” Song-A-Day: The Album” with Nick and Tom from The Spinto Band

Yesterday Jonathan Mann started his collaboration with The Spinto Band’s Nick and Tom, on a month long journey of music fun. With a few musician friends in tow, Mann and Co. recorded their first track yesterday, as well as the video to go with it. Titled “The Song A Day Welcome Song,” featuring a good ole’ ukelele and is only the start of something great. Keep up to date as it’s recorded on on Songatron.com.

Teen Daze Travels To A Silent Planet

In February of 2008, Teen Daze, spent seven weeks studying philosophy in a somewhat remote village in the Swiss Alps. His engulfed himself in books, filling his mind with the teachings of great thinkers who had passed long before he was born and fiction novelists such as C.S. Lewis. In fact, it was Lewis’ Out Of The Silent Planet that served as the inspiration for Daze’s new EP, A Silent Planet.

The six songs that appear on the EP are the result of many musical experiments, auditory accompaniments, and an attempt at a re-creation of Daze’s experiences with this novel. A Silent Planet is set for release on August 9th, but you can pre-order your copy HERE. Below, we’ve included the EP’s lead single “Surface” for free download.

The Spinto Band Team Up with Jonathan Mann to Create a Song a Day

As you all know, The Spinto Band is one of Modern Mystery’s most favorite bands around, so when they are involved in something new and exciting, hell we are on it. Spinto vocalists Nick Krill and Thomas Hughes are about to embark on a month long live recording project with musician friend Jonathan Mann. This venture will be something like you have never experienced before. It will involve audience participation (hey, that’s you!). Mann has been writing a song a day for nearly three years, and he is about to hit his 1,000th tune. Krill and Hughes will be producing Jonathan’s record this June in San Francisco, and trust us, it is far from conventional. The recording sessions have been funded completely by Kickstarter donations of nearly $13,000 as over 250 people have backed the project. You will also get to see what goes on in the studio 24/7 as there will be live web-streaming throughout the whole time. This obviously means hearing amazing tracks as they are getting put down (and possibly Super Smash Brothers challenges). Other musicians will also be involved in the collaboration from long distances as well which makes it super exciting as we have no idea who may appear. Nick Krill has stated that it will involve “various forms of audience participation,” and that sounds super cool to us. Who doesn’t want to be a part of rock n’ roll history? Every day will bring a new song in the month of June with an accompanying music video for each one. Yes, this sounds super ambitious, but you know they can pull it off flawlessly. There is no doubt about it.

You will be able to experience this glorious project starting tomorrow at Johnathan Mann’s site, Songatron.com

Modern Mystery will be spreading the tracks and songs as they come along.
