CONTEST! WIN an ALPHABET BACKWARDS PRIZE PACK!

Photobucket
Are you looking for a cool gift to give yourself for the Holiday Season? Look no further than our cooler-than-cool contest for a BRILLIANT up and coming indie pop band by the name of ALPHABET BACKWARDS. We are giving away an awesome prize package, to not one but TWO lucky winners! One for the ladies, one for the gents. Both will receive an ALPHABET BACKWARDS tee shirt of our color choosing, a tote bag and a copy of the band’s new EP, The British Explorer.

Watch their infectious video for “Taller,” below:

Alphabet Backwards’ ethos is simple: to champion the noble art of Pop music, dancing all the way. It’s infectiously catchy music that puts a smile on your face. It’s a summery, joyous, happy-go-lucky affair, punctuated with an irresistible synth buzz and hooks aplenty – after all, pop is not a dirty word.
The British Explorer EP marks the band’s first recordings with Highline Records. The album was mixed at Press Play Studio with Andy Ramsay (Stereolab) and additional strings were recorded at Marlborough Farm in Brooklyn with Kyle Forester of Crystal Stilts and Gary Olson of The Ladybug Transistor.

To WIN one of these great packages, please e-mail us with your FIRST NAME, LAST NAME, ADDRESS AND TEE SHIRT SIZE at ModernMysteryBlog@yahoo.com. Please put “ALPHABET BACKWARDS” in the title. Entries close on Friday, December 16th at 11:59pm.

WIN AN OFFICIAL TAPE FROM THE SOMEONE STILL LOVES YOU BORIS YELTSIN “TAPE CLUB”

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is obviously the #1 band around here at Modern Mystery (Hey we named the site after them, right?), and we have an AMAZING contest for you to enter, that hell, we’re dying to get a piece of ourselves.

Feast your eyes upon the exclusive, original, Tape Club tape from the month April (2006), that Polyvinyl was nice enough to hook us up with. Not only will you win the rare tape from the old club, but also a copy of Tape Club, their new album of demos and unreleased songs due out October 18th on Polyvinyl. Your choice of Black Vinyl or CD. A 26-song double album that spans 10 years of SSLYBY greatness.

The title is a direct reference to the subscription service SSLYBY started in late 2005 to raise money for tour while copies of their debut Broom (which they had just self-released) were quickly selling out. In exchange for signing up, fans were treated to cassette home recordings of unreleased songs packaged in handmade covers.

To Enter, please E-mail us at MODERNMYSTERYBLOG@YAHOO.COM by Wednesday, October 12th, 2011 at Midnight with your Name and Address. You must live in the U.S. to enter.

You can listen to Tape Club in it’s entirety at http://sslyby.bandcamp.com

ABOUT IAN:

Ian Axel began his career when his typical 20-something job working at a Manhattan Apple Store suddenly became not-so-typical as his bosses caught wind of his musical talents. They flew him around the country to perform at dozens of stores around the United States, and included his songs on the playlists of hundreds of their stores worldwide. Ian officially “touched down” in 2011 when he released his debut full-length, This Is the New Year. The title track received over 1 million YouTube views, he performed on the nationally syndicated Rachael Ray Show and on La Blogothéque’s world-renown Take Away Shows, and his songs were featured on TV shows such as “One Tree Hill,” and as the theme to the MTV documentary series I Used to Be Fat.

However, it’s Ian’s live show that shoots him to new frontiers. He has an energy that recalls the intimacy, energy and excitement of performers like Regina Spektor, Elton John and Randy Newman. NPR described him as “a voice that possesses the sweetness of youth, the stubbornness of a teenager and the swagger of a rock star.” He is capable of captivating an audience as only the greatest performers do, an appeal that has not gone unnoticed, leading to opening gigs for Ingrid Michaelson, Evan Dando and, most recently, for Glee star Matthew Morrison’s at the 2500-capacity Beacon Theater on August 1st.

tUnE-yArDs unveil “Bizness” video, start Japan benefit facepaint contest

tUnE-yArDs are hot on the heels of recording w h o k i l l , coming out April 19th on 4AD, and the band has released a video for single “Bizness.”  In the video, school children playfully run amok, a collage of face-painted adults rotate, reconfigure, and recombine as organic, geometric shapes, and Merrill Garbus fleshes out an envisioning of her primal wail.

In related news, the band have started a contest encouraging fans to “submit photos of themselves – or any other objects they see fit – adorned in coloured face paint. To enter, fans should upload photos via a dedicated Flickr account here. For every photo submitted, Merrill will dedicate $1 to the Japan relief effort. The photo judged to be the most creative will win a boombox decorated by tUnE-yArDs in the colours of the w h o k i l l album artwork.”  Get an idea of what they’re looking for here.
