Ashtar Command Releasing “American Sunshine Volume 1” in 2011

DJ/producer, Chris Holmes, and former Nine Inch Nails member and Filter founder, Brian Liesegang, are the geniuses and/or aliens behind Ashtar Command.

The collaboration hearkens to a new era in music and sociopolitical commentary, as demonstrated in “Gravity,” the album’s first track. Based on interviews Holmes conducted back in ’94 with members of the Heaven’s Gate cult (yes, I’m serious), they put together a video mockumentary about the group that ended up committing mass suicide in 1997. Z Berg does a great job on lead vocals on the track and the album, American Sunshine Volume 1 includes contributions from an assortment of talent including members of Edward Sharp and The Magnetic Zeros, Veruca Salt, Filter, Smashing Pumpkins and R.E.M.

Ashtar Command seeks to promote artistry and independence and the ability to be creative in unprecedented times. Get ready for a sonic exodus out of mainstream pop culture an into another world, or perhaps a new solar system altogether.

Broken Records Debut “A Darkness Rises Up” with Video

We all know religion (the oldest of all establishments) is the least punk thing you can think of, but for some reason it’s been cool for a while now to perform in a church.  Broken Records are doing it.  Their newest video for the 6-piece Edinburgh, Scotland group’s newest single, “A Darkness Rises Up” not only has them strumming along amidst a backwash of stained-glass light, but their mom let them wear their Converse inside too.  Redefining punk aside — really — “Darkness” simply chugs and pops and does all those anthemic things while having a string section provide the extra bravado you can’t get from guitar and bass.  In the video, the lead singer seems tortured enough, and if you’re not convinced, there’s plenty of dilapidated scenery to further commiserate the misery.  You can watch the whole thing below and should you like, remember to pick up Let Me Come Home out on 1/11/11 on 4AD.

The Knife Are Spreading Seeds

Techno group The Knife have released their first single in “Seeds”. The song will come in EP form with remixes from Portable aka Bodycode and Shinedoe.

The song is taken from the group’s album Tomorrow, In A Year which was commissioned by the Danish performance crew Hotel Pro Forma.

The project is based on Darwin’s famous and controversial On The Origin Of Species and challenges the convention of a standard opera. Adding techno is definitely a step in the right direction in that regard.

The single will be out December 6th both digitally and limited edition vinyl. In the meantime, check out The Knife’s mystifying “Silent Shout: An Audio and Visual Experience” right here.

Fujiya & Miyagi Release Music Video for “16 Shades of Black and Blue”

Photobucket
“16 Shades of Black Blue” is the newest release from alternative/electronica indie band Fujiya & Miyagi. Debuting as the first single off of upcoming album Ventriloquizzing, promises to be the most diverse of their albums so far. “We wanted to make a record that was different from anything we had done before,” says singer/guitarist David Best.

Much like other ground breaking bands like the Gorillaz, Fujiya & Miyagi use alternate personas- cleverly disguised dummies resembling themselves. With one look of the video, it is easy to see how the dummies add to the already cryptic and creepy slow pulse of the song. The whispered vocals cut in and out repeating over and over the chorus of the song as a man moves about in the shadows.

Check it out for yourself below.
