Toro y Moi @ Glasslands, Brooklyn, NY -7/1/2010

I don’t know what’s to be said on a band’s live performance compared
to their album itself. It’s all personal preference, and I guess varies
from group to group. Toro y Moi played two shows in New York on July 1st and 2nd. One at the Glasslands Gallery in Williamsburg, and the other at the Whitney Museum in Manhattan.

I was able to catch the Glasslands show, and it was the first time I got to see Toro Y Moi as a three piece band. They opened with “Blessa,” and while the crowd was ecstatic, the
tempo seemed awkwardly fast compared to the record. Even Chaz Bundick, the lead singer, bobbed like a human metronome to keep the beat. Every song was played at this accelerated pace that I was not expecting, and I’m assuming it was just a decision by the band. It did not live up to the “Chill wave” moniker this type of music has be labeled with, although when I had a brief chance to talk with the bassist and drummer they told me the name was a joke.

When they began to play “You Hid,” what I believe to be the chill anthem (there’s no better phrasing for it sorry) of the year, even that had a disappointingly fast beat to it.

That all being said, the venue was jam packed, and I still had a great
time. The music was still miles above most of what’s out there, and I’m
glad I got to see them before they headed off to Europe.

The band, for some reason, asked me not to talk about their clothes so
I’m gonna honor that.

Finally, on an awesome note, one of the band member’s parents were
there, and the mother informed me that she and her husband met through an ad in the Village voice. I thought that was cool.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin Release New Track, “Banned (By the Man)”

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin has just released a sneak peak at another song on their highly anticipated third Polyvinyl release, Let It Sway. The track is titled “Banned (By the Man)” and is a nice follow up to the first song they put out as the single, “Sink/Let It Sway.” SSLYBY can do indie pop like no other band out there. Each song is infectious and their talents are proven in every song. “Banned (By the Man)” featurs amazing harmonies on the band’s part which they really haven’t played around with too much in the past. The Chris Walla produced record will be out on August 17th. The Yeltsins are about to become HUGE.

“Echotone,” the Movie. The Experience.

When I was a young teenager, I was obsessed with a little documentry called Hype! that was put out about the Seattle Grunge scene. I made everyone who came into my path watch it. And I mean everyone (sorry Grandpa!). I remember it made me feel excited about music and fall fully in love with every single aspect of it. No documentry has ever hit me like that until Friday afternoon when I attended a screening of the upcoming film Echotone. Looking around the room, everyone gave it their full attention as it captivated all of us.

Based on the Austin music scene in the present day, Echotone takes you on a ride with bands such as {{{Sunset}}}, Belaire, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, The Octopus Project, The White White Lights and more. Though there are other bands featured, the story is told for a good portion by Bill Baird of {{{Sunset}}}, Black Joe Lewis and Cari Palazzolo of Belaire. All three bring up different struggles in the Austin scene.

Baird, who was formerly in the now disbanded Sound Team, who released one album on Capitol Records, now plays in {{{Sunset}}}, a dreamy musical experience for your ears. He tells the tale of being screwed by the man, and then rebuilding himself as a musician. Lewis, delivers fish in the daytime and plays to packed crowds at night. Palazzolo struggles with not making Belaire a commercial band and trying to hold back at offers. She even makes the band’s cd covers by hand and tee shirts. In the midst of all of this, skyscrapers are being built around some of Austin’s best clubs for music, which to the artists, take away from the musical landscape. Neighbors complain about music from the venues blaring into their house, in which one man even refers to it as a form of “terrorism” (c’mon really??). It’s a struggle for the musicians on a daily basis. When the topic of SXSW is brought up, everyone seems less than thrilled that people are taking over their city for the week. Actually that could be an understatement. For the most part Baird and Palazzolo seem especially outraged by it.

Though the film is set in Austin, you do not have to live there to appreciate the scene. The live footage is specatacular, and the interviews and pieces with the musicians are very heartfelt and personal. You can tell how passionate they are about their music, and how much they want to share it, but still keep it very close to their heart without letting the outside elements exploit it in a fashion they see to be unfit. The music used throught the documentry flows perfectly as the story is told, shaping and molding it into a moving piece. It will make you appreciate music in a way that most people have forgotten.

The tale of Austin is far from over. Quite frankily, as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” it never will be.

Echotone comes out this Fall to the public. It was made by Nathan Christ in conjunction with Reversal Films.

Kevin Barnes Guest Appears on a New Track

It’s already a big year for Of Montreal’s frontman, Kevin Barnes, and the band hasn’t even released their record False Priest (Polyvinyl) yet. Appearing on Chuck Lightning’s compiliation, Barnes sings “Depraved Valet,” a silky jam by Wondaland artist, Roman GianArthur. No, I have no idea who that is either. But, Mr. Barnes is on it so it’s bound to be good, right?

Kevin stated on Stereogum that “Roman GianArthur is gonna be the story of 2011, he is a musical genius, a brilliant arranger, writer, performer … he’s probably a good cook as well. Just you wait Henry Higgins, just you wait — when his album drops, people are gonna drop their groceries!”

Barnes is usually right on the money with his musical predictions. Can we say Janelle Monae? Take a listen to and download the new track below. Get ready for more OM to come this year. It’s going to be a good one.

New Strokes Album Pushed Back. Again.

Whenever we get closer to a new album by The Strokes, they seem to get delayed. Can we have a colllective “UGH”? The date has been pushed back again for the upcoming fourth record that was originally supposed to be out this fall. Now it has a tentative release date of March 2011. Singer Julian Casablancas has been talking about it in interviews and he doesn’t seem to quite have the passion he once did for the band. Though, this has all been judged out of the tone of his voice. As for what he says, Casablancas stated on BBC 6 that this album will be the most collaborative piece that the band has ever done, and it also halfway finished. He is quoted saying the album is “something that I hope works and I hope everyone loves and makes everyone happy.” When talking about The Strokes future, he stated “Let’s make sure no one tries to stab me or something.” Is this serious or Casablancas sarcasm and wit? I guess we’ll have to wait to find out.

She & Him Release New Video for “Thieves”

The dynamic duo of She and Him, better known as Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward make pretty videos to their pretty music. Their newest for the enchanting “Thieves,” is no different. Recently releasing their second record, Volume Two, the group is gaining more attention than even before. And THAT seemed unbeatable.

The video is produced by Norwood Creek, and features a child version of Deschannel and Ward, playing, and sending items to their older selves to discover in the future. Done in a sketchy black and white, it enchances the song for a really emotional impact that is beautifully done. She and Him can do no wrong.
