The Demon Beat *The Charleston* Brooklyn, NY*9-5-09

Very rarely do you see an up and coming band put on one hell of a show, but that’s exactly what The Demon Beat did Saturday night at the Charleston in Brooklyn. Playing to a packed house, the boys who hail from West Virginia had jaws dropping. With infectious blues-rock oriented tunes, the band may be young in years but they play like old pros.

Singer/guitarist Adam Meisterhans is brilliant. With howling vocals that most singers can only dream of, and smooth guitar licks, the kid has it all. Plus he played a solo with his teeth. HIS TEETH! Bassist Tucker Riggleman provides a fantastic vibe to the band as drummer Jordan Hudkins kills it on drums, beating out some of the all time best players. I haven’t seem drums played like that in a long time.

The Demon Beat are surely making waves are certainly on their way to becoming the ‘Next Big Thing.’ The band has a slew of tour dates coming up so be sure to check out their WEBSITE for more info. Kids this is one show you DON’T want to miss!

CMJ Marathon Shares More Bands With the World….

After an eternity of waiting for more CMJ bands to be announced, CMJ leaked the news on about 150 other bands that will be playing this afternoon.  The lineup is filled with unknowns and buzz bands, just how we like it. Polyvinyl and Park the Van are both doing showcases as far as we know. Polyvinyl will have Headlights, James Husband from Of Montreal, Cale Parks and Japandroids. Park the Van has the Spinto Band, and well we got really excited and didn’t get to read any further. The marathon will also feature some new kids on the block (no not those new kids on the block) like Cymbals Eat Guitars , Princeton and the Depreciation Guild. Oddly it also features a couple old timers like Sister Hazel and Vertical Horizon. Really? We’re not sure how we feel about those choices. After all it’s supposed to be about new emerging bands, not 1995’s leftovers. Below is the list released so far, and kids it’s only going to get better from here. Secondhand Sunday: Pavement ‘Major Leagues’

When I listen to Pavement, I still get chills down my spine. I remember hearing them for the first time when I was 12 years old. Stephen Malkmus looks super foxy in this video ladies so watch out. ‘Major Leagues’ was one of their last videos off of Terror Twilight a record I hold very near and dear to my heart. Pavement and golf, does it get any better? (or amusing?). Here’s hoping to one day they decide to reunite. The world needs it.

IT’S OUR ANNIVERSARY!!!

A year ago today we started this little blog that has taken off more than we could ever hope for. I’d like to personally thank all the readers, writers and interns who make this possible. Can you believe it’s our 1 Year Anniversary already?!

Super Congrats to Chris A. for winning our Modern Mystery prize package! I’m super jealous of what’s in there.

Today’s post will be brief. It’s the band that inspired me to start this blog. The Morning Benders. Enjoy your long weekend!

Spinto Band to Release New Ep and CMJ Date Added!

spintoyellow

Modern Mystery favorites The Spinto Band are set to release the EP follow up to last year’s Moonwink titled Slim & Slender (Park the Van) on October 6th. With three new songs by the band plus one incredible cover of Ary Barroso’s ”Brazil,” this album is one of the catchiest releases of the year. If you recall the band performed this song during their last Freakend dates.

As Nick Krill and Tom Hughes switch off on their classic vocals, this is one indie record that will have you dancing. The standout track on the album is ‘Keep Them Alive,” which is equally haunting and poppy. ”Jackhammer” is a rather soft song for the band but still it maintains those incredible Spinto harmonies that we know and love. It shows a more mature side of the band and it resembles a bit of late Pavement.

Closing the EP is ”Thayer Function” which is primarily instrumental with some very sparse vocal. This is a leap for the band as they have never tried something like this before.

The Spinto Band have also announced recently that they are playing the Park the Van showcase at CMJ this year in Brooklyn, and they have extended their fall tour dates. Be sure to catch them on the road, you’ll be sorry you missed them!

Headlights Extend U.S. Tour and Hit Up CMJ

Polyvinyl darlings, Headlights have just extended their already lengthy U.S. tour for the fall. The band drops their third album, Wildlife (Polyvinyl) on October 6th and they are doing everything in their power to promote it. Recording their latest venture was not exactly easy for the band as there was a lot of turmoil which led to the departure of guitarist John Owen. The band states that Wildlife is their most personal album to date, and it’s a bit more complex. The first single, ‘Get Going’ shows just that. You can’t help but feel every emotion in singer Erin Fein’s voice. The Headlights have also announced they will be playing CMJ this year at the Polyvinyl showcase which will take place at Brooklyn’s Bell House. Sharing the bill with the band will also be Japandroids, Cale Parks and James Husband from Of Montreal. This is one CMJ show to mark on your calender.
