Greg Cartwright(the Oblivians, Compulsive Gamblers) and Coco Hames (the Ettes, Coco Motion) had an idea. They would each record a song and release it as a split-45.
That idea has blossomed into a whole album, featuring guest spots by members of the Black Keys and the Raconteurs.
“”I thought, I’d write a song, Greg would write a song, we’d record them together, and that would be that,” says Hames. “Luckily Greg’s prolific awesome switch was on, and we got this whole record instead.”
Recorded under the name the Parting Gifts, the album (The Strychnine Dandelion) features contributions by Dan Auerbach (the Black Keys) and Patrick Keeler (the Raconteurs, the Greenhornes).
You can find it on store shelves and online (of course) November 9th. Luckily for you, we also have one of the tracks available right now! You can hear “Keep Walkin” right here.

Anyway, off to the real news….
Indie pop genius and Jack White sidekick, Brendan Benson, will finally be releasing his newest solo record on August 18 via ATO Records. Benson who is known to most as part of The Raconteurs, of course started off as a solo artist with a string of catchy and very poppy records. This will be his 4th album titled ‘My Old, Familar Friend,’ which was recorded both in Nashville and England, both a long way from his Detroit roots. The first single has yet to be released but we do know it is titled ‘A Whole Lot Better’. Benson will also be doing a solo tour this summer which gives the Raconteurs a nice little break. Hopefully this time around Benson will get the full credit and attention he deserves that hasn’t always been present on his prior records.
‘My Old, Familar Friend’ Tracklisting:
1. A Whole Lot Better
2. Eyes on the Horizon
3. Garbage Day
5. Feel Like Taking You Home
6. You Make a Fool Out of Me
7. Poised and Ready
8. Don’t Want To Talk
10. Lesson Learned

Sometimes late night music videos capture my attention. Case in point, Cage the Elephant, a band that has been surrounded by a ‘great big buzz’ lately. The Kentucky five piece who started gaining attention in the UK before they even broke out here, have been making waves with their first single ‘Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked’. The tune sounds like the love child between The White Stripes and The Black Keys, both flattering comparisions. Blending a bit of soul and blues into their rock and roll vibe, Cage the Elephant is already on their way to being the next ‘big thing’.
