The Morning Benders are back at it again with the second video off their new record Big Echo (Plus One/Roughtrade), with the song “Promises.” This is the first music video by the band that doesn’t feature themselves, it’s also their most theatrical.
The video chronicles two young Bonnie and Clyde like characters…and by young we mean about eight to ten years old. They get into abnormal trouble for children their age and somehow get involved with drinking, smoking, triple x shows, bank robbery (under the name Morning Benders), cat throwing, gun toting, hostages, and ultimate death and suicide. It’s a bit heavy for video by The Morning Benders, but it is also hands down, their best yet. Who knew they had it in them?
Also if you’re in the New York City area, be sure to catch The Morning Benders at the end of their tour. The band will be playing tomorrow (Saturday) night at The Music Hall of Williamsburg and again this coming Wednesday to a Sold Out crowd at Mercury Lounge.
Lollapalooza is almost here! The festival just announced this morning the full line up, and we must say, it’s the best batch of bands we’ve seen in years. It makes us wish this was still a show that went on tour. The fun all goes down from August 6th to 8th at Grant Park in Chicago.
Reunions and big name stars will be gracing the stage and you won’t know where to go first. Some of the bands and artists that will be appearing include the recently reunited Soundgarden, The Strokes, Lady Gaga, MGMT, New Pornographers, The Morning Benders, Arcade Fire, Spoon, The National, Gogol Bordello, Mutemath, Metric, Dirty Projectors, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Phoenix, the xx, Blitzen Trapper, The Miniature Tigers, Grizzly Bear, The Walkmen, Waaves, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Javelin, Harlem, Hockey and TONS more.

What better way to start Spring off then with some old school Morning Benders. There’s nothing we can really say about this song from the poppy (former) Californians, but it’s ohhhhh so good. This week’s edition of Secondhand Sunday is their track for “Waiting For a War.” Get ready to start dancing around your apartement. Yea, the Morning Benders just make you want to do that, don’t they?
The Morning Benders have certainly come up in the world. You don’t have to search hard on Modern Mystery to find out that we’ve loved this band since day one. I personally recall listening to the band for the first time when one of their first videos for “Waiting for a War,” came onto the scene from their debut album Talking Through Tin Cans (+1 Music) in 2008. For most people, the guys have been a bit off the radar until recently. Now they seem to be exploding everywhere we look. Their newest record titled Big Echo (Rough Trade) will be out on March 9th and is produced by no other than Grizzly Bear’s own Chris Taylor.
The Morning Benders just put out an amazing performance video of their new song ” Excuses,” which singer Chris Chu performed at CMJ during his very intimate Lit Lounge performance with a bunch of very talented teenagers. In the video for “Excuses” the band was joined with the help of various people and friends (spot Chris from Girls? or the sensational John Vanderslice?) along with the Echo Chamber Orchestra. The Morning Benders are about to become your new favorite band, if they aren’t already. Check out the video and tour dates below including shows with Surfer Blood and The Miniature Tigers!

The Morning Benders broke onto the scene with their mid-2008 release, Talking Thru Tin Cans (Plus One), and now are back to show the world they weren’t just a sunny one hit wonder band. The group is set to release their second album Big Echo on their new home, Rough Trade on March 9th, but first they are giving out a little gift to the fans. If you head over to their website you can download their new single from the album titled “Promises” for free. The track picks up where thier debut album ended, but you can see a natural, more mature progression in the band. They still have their catchy hooks and California glow that we have come to know and love. The Morning Benders will also be taking the stage around the country on their first headling tour running from March to April. They are also taking The Miniature Tigers on the road with them so this is certainly going to be a tour not to miss!

Chris Chu is not only the charasmatic lead singer of California’s indie-pop group The Morning Benders, but he has also taken on the role lately of beginner solo artist. Chu performed to a packed house on Thursday night at the Living Room during CMJ. The Morning Benders who are set to release their sophmore album Big Echo (Plus One Music) early next year, sent him out to showcase the new tracks. Chu, who already has an unforgettable voice, shown a new light to the upcoming songs.
The Morning Benders have managed to make an easy transition from the first album Talking Through Tin Cans, maintaining their sugary pop hooks; the songs come off well acoustically which only left everyone in the room hankering for the real thing. Amongst the new songs, Chu pulled off superb covers of Radiohead, Phil Spektor and Neutral Milk Hotel cover. With the help of a local teen choir on background vocals and an enthusiastic crowd, he ended the night with a new tune. Clearly, we’re all ready for the album to drop.
