Summer Camp Release “Christmas Wrapping” Cover Just For You

If you think about it, Christmas is kind of like summer camp, just with snow, presents and fewer kayaking incidents. Fitting then that British duo, Summer Camp have holiday presents for all of you. Yay Christmas! They’ve covered the classic Waitresses track, “Christmas Wrapping,” which like all good presents, is free.

With a full-length release slated for Summer 2011, Summer Camp have released their debut EP, Young, with praises calling it an “effervescent slice of indie pop” (Pitchfork) and “gorgeous vocal that traces the arc of a girl group melody.” (Uncut)

On the heels of their Christmas single, lead singer/guitarist John McCauley and guitarist Ian O’Neill have released a series of stripped down acoustic shows. McCauley has also added a solo date on December 20th to benefit Invisible Children, a non-profit committed to ending conflict in Uganda.

Radio Department to Release Singles Compiliation

The Radio Department comes out with a selection of their latest (of the past eight years) and greatest (of those eight years) work: Passive Aggressive: Singles 2002-2010 for release on January 25th, 2011.

This “best hits” compilation of sorts of at least their time thus far with Labrador Records is complete with a double disk and some B-sides and rarities mixed in. The Swedish indie label is boding this release as a result of the success of their best selling band. Such success does not come without its obstacles, however. The Radio Department are undoubtedly rock stars, but hesitant – or at least coy – ones at that. Considering their popularity, it seems strange that they have consistently been hesitant to sign contracts, expose themselves to the media and generally skeptical of their acceptance by fans, critics and the rest of the musical community they – whether or not they believe they do or should – belong to.

Until their tour of said album, satiate your need for The Radio Department with the dream-pop track “Never Swallow Fruit” off their just released EP, Never Follow Suit, accompanied perhaps by a candle lit room with an uncontrolled drug of the green variety.

Look out for their tour celebrating this album, including the upcoming New York shows on 11/30 and 12/01 at the Knitting Factory and Bowery Ballroom, respectively.

Toro y Moi @ Glasslands, Brooklyn, NY -7/1/2010

I don’t know what’s to be said on a band’s live performance compared
to their album itself. It’s all personal preference, and I guess varies
from group to group. Toro y Moi played two shows in New York on July 1st and 2nd. One at the Glasslands Gallery in Williamsburg, and the other at the Whitney Museum in Manhattan.

I was able to catch the Glasslands show, and it was the first time I got to see Toro Y Moi as a three piece band. They opened with “Blessa,” and while the crowd was ecstatic, the
tempo seemed awkwardly fast compared to the record. Even Chaz Bundick, the lead singer, bobbed like a human metronome to keep the beat. Every song was played at this accelerated pace that I was not expecting, and I’m assuming it was just a decision by the band. It did not live up to the “Chill wave” moniker this type of music has be labeled with, although when I had a brief chance to talk with the bassist and drummer they told me the name was a joke.

When they began to play “You Hid,” what I believe to be the chill anthem (there’s no better phrasing for it sorry) of the year, even that had a disappointingly fast beat to it.

That all being said, the venue was jam packed, and I still had a great
time. The music was still miles above most of what’s out there, and I’m
glad I got to see them before they headed off to Europe.

The band, for some reason, asked me not to talk about their clothes so
I’m gonna honor that.

Finally, on an awesome note, one of the band member’s parents were
there, and the mother informed me that she and her husband met through an ad in the Village voice. I thought that was cool.
