Sufjan’s Label Not Happy With Amazon Pricing

sufjanSufjan Stevens maybe excited that his album is being released, but his record label, Asthmatic Kitty, may not be as excited.

The label sent out a letter to fans, seemingly asking them to not buy Steven’s new album, The Age of Adz, from the massive online retailer, Amazon.

We have it on good authority that Amazon will be selling The Age of Adz for a very low price on release date, not unlike they did with Arcade Fire’s recent (and really terrific) The Suburbs,” reads the letter. “We have mixed feelings about discounted pricing. Like we said, we love getting good music into the hands of good people, and when a price is low, more people buy. A low price will introduce a lot of people to Sufjan’s music and to this wonderful album. For that, we’re grateful. But we also feel like the work that our artists produce is worth more than a cost of a latte. We value the skill, love, and time they’ve put into making their records. And we feel that our work too, in promotion and distribution, is also valuable and worthwhile.”
It continues, “That’s why we personally feel that physical products like EPs should sell for around $7 and full-length CDs for around $10-12 We think digital EPs should sell for around $5 and full-length digital albums for something like $8. So you might wonder why we’d ‘allow’ Amazon to sell it for lower than that. There are several reasons why, but mostly? It’s because we believe in you. We trust you and in your ability to make your own choice.”

The Age of Adz will be released October 12 via both physical and digital retailers.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Announce Secret Show for Tomorrow Night (9/22) in Brooklyn

This week marks the 10 year anniversary of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. To celebrate, the band has decided to put on a special surprise show that will take place tomorrow night, Wednesday 9/22, at Monster Island Basement in Brooklyn. Yes we know it’s like the tiniest place ever for them to be playing, but that’s exactly what they are going for here.

The band left this statement about the show:

“Happy Birthday YYYS! This week marks 10 years since YYYs played our first small club show in the big city! Our birthday wish is to play a show as small or smaller than back in the day and get NOSTALGIC with our friends Todd P and Secret Project Mighty Robot on September 22. So dust off your Machine EPs or maybe give Yeah New York! a whirl because we’re digging up some oldies but goodies, heavy on the early catalogue. It’s back to basics, just the three of us and a couple hundred of you. Accommodations will be tight so we’d like to apologize in advance to those who want to be there but don’t get in, we thank you for humoring us with this selfish wish to make it so puny!”

The show is ALL AGES and tickets are $20.
They go on sale at SECRET PROJECT ROBOT on Tuesday September 21 (TODAY) between 6-8pm ONLY!

Amy Bezunartea has a voice that is almost as hard to place as her name.

Part Joni Mitchell, part Magnetic Fields, this new addition to Kiam Records, run by Jennifer O’Connor, is set to release her debut album on November 2nd.

Produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.), Amy is celebrating the album with a (free) release party at the Living Room in New York City, November 3rd.

That’s not all. You can hear the first single from her album, “Doubles,” right here!
