Interview: Checking in With Saint Motel

Saint Motel are currently one of the biggest up and coming indie pop bands of the year. Blazing away three shows at SXSW this band is headed for bigger things. Currently playing a mini tour with indie darlings Band of Skulls, singer and guitarist A/J Jackson took time out of his busy schedule to talk to us this afternoon.

Modern Mystery: You just got back from SXSW. Did you enjoy it? How did you find the audience’s reaction to be?

A/J Jackson: t was our first time officially at a showcase. We played three I think. We had one official show and two parties. I think the reaction was good, we played shows for 1,800 people and it was madness. After the show we met some interesting people. A drunk man came up to me and said to take this advice “I’ve seen a lot of shows and I think you’re going to be playing stadiums!” I think the reaction was really good.

MM: You’ve blown up pretty fast. Does the constant attention you’ve been getting amaze you?

Jackson: I don’t know if we really noticed it, we just do what we do. From our music to our shows to our videos, we try to take it to a larger level. We’re just trying to outgrow the van

MM: The band formed while you were all in film school. Do you have any input on your music videos?

Jackson: We came up with the concepts, yea we all came up with the concepts. I came up with 3, one of the other guys did 2, and another 1. We come up with ideas ourselves.

MM: What’s the meaning behind the name “Saint Motel”?

Jackson: We just wanted a name that was two words that necessarily didn’t fit together, and when you say it together if feels good and when you think about it’s good. We wanted a name that charaterized us. We wanted music that described the name, not a name that described the music.

MM: What bands, new or old, inspired you to make music?

Jackson: Current bands I’d say like, a lot of bands that are performance bands are great. Animal Collective, a lot of stuff like Grizzly Bear. This local band called We Are the World, who are kind of like performance art. As far as what we’re influenced by is things we can agree on from noise rock to metal to folk music.

MM: If you had to choose one, would you be making films or making music?

Jackson: Music for sure. Music is everyone’s number one passion in this band.

MM: How did you start your own label (On the Records), and what inspired you to do so? Does the band have a lot of involvement in the inner workings of the label?

Jackson: I guess result of the situation we were in. There was nothing that was too amazing out there for us at that point so we decided to do it independently. We do all our own videos, posters, and we do a lot of the visual ideas. We made an EP and CD.

MM: How does the band write songs. Is it a collaboration or does everyone bring in their own ideas?

Jackson: It’s a collaborative effort. It used to be just my stuff, but now it all get’s interpreted.

MM: Which do you prefer more, being in the studio or being on tour, since they are so different?

Jackson: Personally I like being on the road. I like being in a new city every day. The studio doesn’t always equate with new music. I don’t need a studio. I can be in a van or a park or Stonehenge or at the Eifel Tower!

MM: After this mini tour with Band of Skulls, what is up next for the band?

Jackson: More touring, a new release sometime soon with exciting material. Different stuff we haven’t done. We’re having fun with everything we do.

Secondhand Sunday: The Morning Benders “Waiting For a War”

What better way to start Spring off then with some old school Morning Benders. There’s nothing we can really say about this song from the poppy (former) Californians, but it’s ohhhhh so good. This week’s edition of Secondhand Sunday is their track for “Waiting For a War.” Get ready to start dancing around your apartement. Yea, the Morning Benders just make you want to do that, don’t they?

SURFER BLOOD + Interview + Remix = Freakin’ Awesome

Surfer Blood. Ah. We can’t seem to get enough of them here at Modern Mystery, but really, who can? The band just finished up a ton of successful shows at SXSW and are still on their forever extensive tour that tickets are becoming harder and harder to get (Oh I’m having Vampire Weekend flashbacks all over again!).

We first met Surfer Blood at CMJ 2009. They were a little late for our interview, and quite frankily we weren’t even 100% sure what these boys looked like. From the back of a van we conducted their first interview EVER. Five bright eyed guys who said they were worried about getting one CMJ show and somehow ended up with nine. From the first moment we saw them live with a handful of people at Santo’s Party House, every CMJ show seemed to get bigger and bigger. It was only the beginning and we knew they were going to be huge.

Today in our system we came across the Surfer Blood Remix of “Swim,” (Alpaca Remix by Allen Blickle of Baroness) and remembered how rad it is. For your listening pleasure it’s down below.

Also, here is the previously mentioned INTERVIEW with Surfer Blood.

Interview: Warming Up with Miike Snow

You’ve been hearing the name everywhere. They’re probably your new favorite group. Everyone wants a piece of Miike Snow. No, it isn’t a one man band, it’s a three piece electro outfit originally hailing from Sweden. Over the weekend we had the chance to catch up with singer Andrew Wyatt about their overnight success and their SXSW shows. Take a peak below!

Modern Mystery: Your album exploded onto the scene pretty quickly. Did you ever expect this much attention and praise?

Andrew Wyatt: Not really, not at all. We thought it was something that was fun to make and also some sort of cliche amongst our peers. We never thought it would be music for the people.

MM: What do you like better, remixing or being remixed and why?

Wyatt: Remixing, just because it’s a little more proactive. We just try to pick something we like, and that has process of emotions.

MM: You are set to play SXSW next week. Is this your first time playing the festival and are you excited?

Wyatt: Yea we are very excited! It’s a great festival with a long running tradition. It’s our first time playing.

MM: How does the group come up with songs?

Wyatt: We’re all in the same room. Someone may have ideas in their head. We all create the songs in the same room in the prescence of each other. We take turns after it’s done.

MM: How long did it take you to create the debut album?

Wyatt: Probably 4 or 5 weeks, not inclduing mixing. With mixing it took 6 weeks.

MM: Are you constantly working on new material?

Wyatt: When we are on tour its difficult. I don’t think were going to make the new album on a laptop. The instruments we use are not on the tour bus. It’s difficult to make a new album with us touring so much.

MM: How do you create what you did in the studio and bring it onto the live stage successfully?

Wyatt: Theres just different ways. Sometimes you can’t do something on stage you did on an album. You have to find a viable replacement for that.

MM: What’s your favorite part about playing a show?

Wyatt: I think crowd surfing. So far we don’t have a favorite place to play. We’ve had great audiences all over place. We’re really excited for Coachella though.

MM: What does the next Miike Snow record have in store? Or are you guys just focused on touring right now?

Wyatt: We’ve been thinking about what we want to do , and we have a title an an album cover and were going to work backwards from there.

MM: Your videos are pretty amazing and artistic. Do you guys have a hand in the concept?

Wyatt: Not really the directors have responsibilities and time constraints. It hinders us from ideas. The next record we’re going to have more input on the videos, and we will be more involved next time.

MM: Where do you see Miike Snow five years from now?

Wyatt: We’ll have our own private islands and send out smoke signals to communicate. We’ll throw out our blackberrys!

MM: You’re playing three sold out shows in New York. Are you excited about those?

Wyatt: Of course, and in October we’ll playing Terminal 5. I hope we’ll sell those out too of course its nice to see those big full shows. Like shows in your hometown, there’s nothing like it.

Creating Beats with Krista Loewen of You Say Party! We Say Die!

Vancouver’s ownYou  Say Party! We Say Die! has certainly been gaining attention ever since their first release, Hit the Floor (Sound Document) graced audience’s ears in 2005. The band has been on the rise from day one and recently released their newest and third record titled XXXX (Paper Bag Records). This has proven to be a charming album filled with infectious vocals, and dance beats that will only leave you wanting more. We had the chance to talk to keyboardist Krista Loewen who just got back from playing her first Olympics show. Here’s what she had to say….

Modern Mystery: From the start, the band has gained a good deal of attention. Did you ever think you would take off as quickly as you did?

Krista Loewen: It took us all by surprise quite a bit. The reason for starting the band was finding something to do in a boring suburb. Our goal was to get a show in Vancouver. We thank and praise our fans all the time.

MM: You’re about to head out on a lengthy tour. What is your favorite part about being on the road? Are you excited to get out there?

Loewen: I’m looking forward to coming back to the states. It’s been several years since we’ve been there. I do enjoy it and I love spending time with the band, enjoying their company. You wouldn’t think we’d enjoy each other’s company after being in a van for so long. Also meeting people and our fans while on the road is the best!

MM: What’s your favorite city to play a show in?

Loewen: I have a lot of favorite cities, I can’t just pick one. I cant have a favorite if it’s several, right?! In Canada I like Winnipeg, Montreal, and Halifax a lot. In the states I don’t have enough of a reference since it’s been several years since we’ve been there. We didn’t spend much time in the first place. I want to spend more time in nyc. The first time we played there we in and out for the show. We didn’t get a chance to look around.

MM:  What is the main inspiration behind the songs on XXXX?Loewen: The five of us coming to a new place in our friendship, and our love for our music after running ourself ragged. Mostly the renewed love of those two things.

MM: Do you find it hard to bring to the stage what you created in the studio?

Loewen: In some elements, yes. There’s certain types of gear you can’t take on stage. I can’t bring my Hammond organ on tour. It’s too big. There’s certain elements in the studio that we find it hard to do live. We don’t make the live show like the recording, we make it a different experience. We’re a different kind of animal than we are on the albuim . We embrace it and go with it.

MM: What is your favorite song to play live and why?

Loewen: It’s consistently changing especially when you’re on tour every night. ”There Is Love (Within My Heart)” is my favorite right now. We’ve been starting our set with that song and it puts me in the perfect headspace to play. It’s a g ood starting song. It’s also the first song on the new record.

MM: When you’re not touring and recording, what do you spend your time doing?

Loewen: Working! Especially when we’re not on the road. I live in a house with a bunch of other women in Vancouver. It’s a whole house, with five of us living there with a bunch of animals. I like to hang out in the beach in Vancouver, and I like to garden. I’m not sure what to do for work when I come back. I just quit my job to go on tour. Luckily we’re on the road for a while!

MM: How did you get involved with playing the Olympic shows?

Loewen: We actually did one this morning! We played this morning at the ladies ski event at Cypress Mountain between the finals. Its been interesting! A lot of local bands were asked to take parts in the events. They have quite an extensive, cultural side Olympics. It’s a big CanCon festival.

MM:  How have fans embraced the songs on the new record? What has their overall reaction been?

Loewen: Overall the reaction is pretty positive. There’s always going to be people who like the older stuff better. It’s been a pretty well received album. We definetly get a lot of good feedback from a lot of our fans.

MM: How does the songwriting process occur for the band?
It’s fairly collaborative. It usually happens when someone develops a song on their own and it evolves in the group. Sometimes someone comes in with a whole thing and tells us what to play. We spend a lot of hours down in the jam space. We have a rehearsal space/mini storage in downtown Vancouver.

MM:  Who inspired you to play music?

Loewen: It goes back to when I’m younger and I was really inspired by Blondie, The Go-Gos, and Joan Jett. I got into a lot of those bands in high school. Especially Debbie and Joan Jett…I loved them to pieces when I was 16 and 17years old. I still do but not in the same way.

MM: Are the The Smoking Spokes still around? If not, do you plan on ever reuniting them?

Loewen: Stephen actually posted on our Twitter yesterday something about going out for a bike ride and that “The Smoking Spokes Ride Again!” We had some fun times with it. Its another thing we did to get away from being bored in the suburbs. We actually talked about getting a bike rack on the back of the van, but 6 or7 bikes wouldn’t really work.

Drew Danburry ‘Memorial Day’

Just when you didn’t think we could find a song about Memorial Day we proved you wrong. Indie artist Drew Danburry who has just recently toured with those lovely lads in Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, hasn’t always had it easy when he comes to music (remember his disaster of a tour in 2008?), but it doesn’t stop him from making brilliant songs. We’re sure he is of the very few musicians to have a song about Memorial Day (at least that we know of). Maybe he wrote it just for that reason.
