The Drums Co-Headline Fall Tour with Surfer Blood

….yep and our little heads just exploded. Two of the hottest bands to come out of the indie scene in quite some time have announced that they will be doing a co-headlining tour in the fall with each other. The Drums, who started gaining attention at CMJ 2008, and Surfer Blood, who started being a blogger’s dream at CMJ 2009 (Yea we did their first ever interview. Jealous?), are taking the nation by storm for about two solid months. Hipsters everywhere are celebrating we’re sure of it. Since their CMJ hype, The Drums have become one of the most talked about band in the UK and Surfer Blood have become the most notable band of the year with their debut, Astrocoast (Kanine).

The tickets will be on sale TOMORROW MORNING, and they are expected to go fast. This may be the hottest show of the fall. The Drums and Surfer Blood hit up Webster Hall in NYC on October 22nd. This does sound like a CMJ showcase to us. Why not? It’s what launched both of them in a big way. Surfer Blood is also set to play NYC on October 19th, the first day of CMJ. Hmmmm…..

You can get your tickets starting tomorrow here at thedrumsandsurferblood.com

Fall never felt so good.

Siren Music Festival Celebrates 10 Years, Announces Lineup

Coney Island’s best, biggest, and only festival is celebrating 10 years at the iconic location. The Siren Music Festival is set to take place on July 17th in everyone’s favorite summer hot stop. The festival, which is in it’s 10th year, is starting to announce a few bands that are slated to play this year. Amongst the performers announced so far are Surfer Blood, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Matt and Kim, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Harlem. More bands are to be released soon, but the lineup so far looks pretty amazing to us.

The festival is FREE as it is every year, and it’s always packed, so you better make sure you plan to get there early. Siren Music Festival has been booking the coolest acts since the beginning. Past performers include the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Peaches, Modest Mouse, !!!, TV on the Radio, Death Cab for Cutie, Spoon, Brendan Benson, VHS or Beta, Tapes ‘N Tapes, We Are Scientists, Dr. Dog, White Rabbits, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Ra Ra Riot, Islands, Beach House, and Bear Hands just to name a few.

Who knows what additions will be made to the lineup this year.

Surfer Blood Covers The Beach Boys

Starting to spread around the internet like a wild fire, Surfer Blood, one of the biggest buzz bands in Indie since The Strokes, has just released their first ever demo.

Originally posted on NME’s The Daily Download, the band did a cover of The Beach Boys “Don’t Worry Baby.” Surfer Blood puts a lo-fi spin on it and singer J.P. Pitts voice is heavenly, just like the original. Though the background vocals are a little distance, it’s exciting to hear the band in their earliest stage. This is definetly a must listen, even if you are the slightest bit curious. Surfer Blood really does the song justice.

Surfer Blood’s debut album Astrocoast was released on Kanine Records earlier this year.

Secondhand Sunday: The Morning Benders “Waiting For a War”

What better way to start Spring off then with some old school Morning Benders. There’s nothing we can really say about this song from the poppy (former) Californians, but it’s ohhhhh so good. This week’s edition of Secondhand Sunday is their track for “Waiting For a War.” Get ready to start dancing around your apartement. Yea, the Morning Benders just make you want to do that, don’t they?

SURFER BLOOD + Interview + Remix = Freakin’ Awesome

Surfer Blood. Ah. We can’t seem to get enough of them here at Modern Mystery, but really, who can? The band just finished up a ton of successful shows at SXSW and are still on their forever extensive tour that tickets are becoming harder and harder to get (Oh I’m having Vampire Weekend flashbacks all over again!).

We first met Surfer Blood at CMJ 2009. They were a little late for our interview, and quite frankily we weren’t even 100% sure what these boys looked like. From the back of a van we conducted their first interview EVER. Five bright eyed guys who said they were worried about getting one CMJ show and somehow ended up with nine. From the first moment we saw them live with a handful of people at Santo’s Party House, every CMJ show seemed to get bigger and bigger. It was only the beginning and we knew they were going to be huge.

Today in our system we came across the Surfer Blood Remix of “Swim,” (Alpaca Remix by Allen Blickle of Baroness) and remembered how rad it is. For your listening pleasure it’s down below.

Also, here is the previously mentioned INTERVIEW with Surfer Blood.

The Morning Benders Release Friend Filled Video for “Excuses”

The Morning Benders have certainly come up in the world. You don’t have to search hard on Modern Mystery to find out that we’ve loved this band since day one. I personally recall listening to the band for the first time when one of their first videos for “Waiting for a War,” came onto the scene from their debut album Talking Through Tin Cans (+1 Music) in 2008. For most people, the guys have been a bit off the radar until recently. Now they seem to be exploding everywhere we look.  Their newest record titled Big Echo (Rough Trade) will be out on March 9th and is produced by no other than Grizzly Bear’s own Chris Taylor.

The Morning Benders just put out an amazing performance video of their new song ” Excuses,” which singer Chris Chu performed at CMJ during his very intimate Lit Lounge performance with a bunch of very talented teenagers. In the video for “Excuses”  the band was joined with the help of various people and friends (spot Chris from Girls? or the sensational John Vanderslice?) along with the Echo Chamber Orchestra. The Morning Benders are about to become your new favorite band, if they aren’t already. Check out the video and tour dates below including shows with Surfer Blood and The Miniature Tigers!
