The follow up to the hit-single, “Pressure,” Shaffer does it once again with his pop-rock sensibilities that keep us constantly intrigued. The artist, who has been creating quite a buzz this year, is no stranger to the life of a musician. Touring and recording for several years, now is his time to fully shine through. Shaffer’s vocal work is gorgeous and precise, and it works perfectly with the musical flow of the track. From start to finish the song entices, making you want to press the replay button a moment after it is finished.
An artist on the rise, singer-songwriter Molly Kruse has become one of our favorite artists in the new year. The eclectic musician who has been making waves with her honest and heartfelt songs, brings to the table a new video for “Ruby,” that makes us fall head over heels for her even more so. We had the chance to catch up with Molly Kruse to dive into the stunning new release, in our latest addition of Video Voyeur.
Tell us the story of this song, why did you choose to visualize this song specifically?
Thanks for featuring “Ruby”! The song is about a little girl who I knew a few years ago, whose family mistreated and neglected her. Her story deeply resonated with me – as I’d had my own negative experiences in childhood – and hence, felt extremely motivated to write about what I’d witnessed. I chose to visualize this song specifically because of the lyrical portrait I’d painted of the little girl’s life. For me, there was such a strong story to tell via film, and because I had such poignant visual images when writing the song, that it was an easy choice to make a video about “Ruby”.
What was the inspiration behind this video (visuals, storyline, etc.)?
I’ve always been attracted to and inspired by retro style of the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s, so when I made a vision board for the video, images of Jacqui O., Sofia Loren, and other 60’s style icons filed the pages. Also, I loved the coloring of Adele’s video “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)”, the concept and execution of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good”, and Lana Del Rey’s general retro style, so those elements certainly played a role too in shaping the visuals of the video. When I sent the vision board over to Jamie, my director, she came back with a pitch deck chock-FULL of the most amazing retro, folk, lifestyle images and vignettes – all with muted color schemes and somewhat hipster leanings; “Ruby” was born from that!
What was the process of making this video?
The process was so organized and well-executed. Jamie and her crew are very experienced filmmakers, so their level of education and know-how led to a very high level of professionalism on set; everything was tightly scheduled and well-thought-out, with a lot of wiggle room for creativity and spontaneity. There was a great sense of bonhomie between cast and crew, and watching Cami, the girl that plays Ruby in the video, was a special treat for all of us on the day of the shoot because she’s so damn talented! Also, the pre-production process was equally enjoyable because it was two artists – director/visionary and musician – creating a really stunning visual palette and searching for the perfect location to realize our dreams. Tell us the story of this song, why did you choose to visualize this song specifically?
I went out to Thailand last March with my producer to write an album. The 3rd night I’m there, I go out with my friends and I meet one of my friends roommates. This beautiful girl (Girl on the mural behind Amoeba Music in LA). She was wearing a grey beanie the night i met her and that was the basis of the song. I chose to visualize this one because I feel when you see and read the lyrics, it starts to paint a much clearer story. Sometimes when I listen to a song, I don’t fully grasp all the lyrics. I wanted to take my fans on the exact journey I went through.
What was the inspiration behind this video (visuals, storyline, etc.)?
I told my videographer the story of the song. How we met, the magic that happened during my time there. We always met in the evening and there was something so dreamy and mysterious about it all. I thought the lyric video did a great job of capturing that vibe.
What was the process of making this video?
The process was quite easy. My videographer is a good friend of mine so he already understands that i love simple, yet impactful images. The first version had an orange, desert vibe to it. I told him to make look like it’s was night time, and he changed the entire color scheme and voila! Grey Beanie
