Angela Soffe has steadily become a regularly featured artist on Modern Mystery this year. Her gorgeously crafted new video for “Rocks,” is as bold as the song itself. This video captures the essence of Soffe as her eclectic sound draws you closer. We had the pleasure of catching up with Angela and she is our premiere artist for our new Video Voyeur series.
Q: Tell us the story of this song, why did you choose to visualize this song specifically?
A: This song was the first one I wrote of all the songs on the record and seemed to speak to the vulnerable side within each of us. People who heard it wanted to know the story behind it, and what better way to tell a story than through something visual people can share and relate to. I wrote it at a time when I was questioning a lot of aspects of my life and feeling some shame and doubt. I wrote it one night while I was sitting on a mattress on the floor in my room with a guitar I had neglected for several years. ‘Rocks’ carries a universal message that I think many people can relate to, and I wanted to show that visually.
Q: What was the inspiration behind this video (visuals, storyline, etc.)?
A: When I was in the studio recording the album, I had a mental image for each song on the record. I knew what it sounded like and looked like as the songs took shape, which I think helped form the emotion of the songs from the very beginning. I would describe the visual imagery to the band before recording and then we’d go record it and the songs materialized out of that description. So when it came time to create the music video for ‘Rocks’ I already knew what it looked like in my head. I had an image of a stone being cast off a cliff into the ocean as a symbol of letting go of judgement. With that imagery, I worked really closely with the film director to craft a narrative that would work around that. My videographer and director was fantastic and really understood what I was going for, so it all came together pretty seamlessly.
Q: What was the process of making this video?
A: This was my first music video, so I didn’t really know what to expect, but really loved the process! We shot the video over 2 days in 3 locations in Seattle, Washington. The process was a lot more simple than I imagined, and we had fun trying to be serious (even when I had the giggles). I had an amazing crew that planned out every last detail and even cooked food and brought donuts for our extras. The outdoor scene when I’m running in the dress was supposed to be a sunny day with gleaming sunshine, but being Seattle…it was gloomy, rainy and freezing cold. Which turned out to be a good look for the shot but we were all fairly miserable during the shoot. I remember standing on the edge of the cliff looking up at the crew all huddled under umbrellas, shivering and I suddenly felt so grateful for these people. I could not have asked for a better, more patient, kind, group of talented film producers to work with. Five stars to my crew! =)
