Hunx And His Punx Announce 2011 Tour, Release Single For Debut Album

Hunx and His Punx, that mixture of 50s teenage rock n roll, 60s girl groups and bubblegum pop, are finally releasing a proper album after 2009’s Gay Singles LP (Matador/True Panther Sounds), which was a collection of hard-to-find and out-of-print 7″ singles. The Album, Too Young To Be In Love, has a release date of March 29, 2011 through Hardly Art. The foursome will take their “Deliciously trashy homoerotic pop” (Pitchfork) on the road in April after a date at SXSW.

Tim Cohen Turns Out Yet Another Album (and EP)

While Tim Cohen’s band The Few and Onlys took a much needed breather from producing albums and tours, Cohen used that time to bust out a solo LP, Magic Trick coupled with a nine song EP, Bad Blood.

“Don’t Give Up” off Magic Trick was chosen as one of Pitchfork’s best new tracks and can be heard on their web site.  While still maintaining a bummed out sluggish tone, the message of the track is upbeat and encouraging: “trying to make a bad thing better/Bad things happen all the time/You have to lay it on the line/Sooner or later you’ll be fine/Don’t give up,” with minimal yet hopeful xylophone acting as kind of a bridge and soft doo wop female back up vocals. He has kind of a Magnetic Fields thing going on in that the content of the music and lyrics can be strangely positive while defeat can be found in the vocals, but in each case that quality is why the artists have all the fans they do.

One of many intriguing components of Cohen is his artwork that always accompanies his band’s or his solo work, all of which are semi gothic and haunting folk drawings that on their own are separate and distinct achievements from the music.

Xray Eyeballs To Release Debut Album On Kanine Records

Xray Eyeballs, the lovechild of frontman O.J. San Felipe, look to April 19th as the day they drop their debut LP Not Nothing on the world. The Brooklyn fivesome want to make every song sound like a lullaby...(but) not all happy lullabies either. I think people like songs they can relate to, with things like love, loss, dark vices, and sex,” says O.J. Drawing comparisons to the frantic pop of Jay Reatard and the Urinals, and the moodiness of Velvet Underground and Jesus and Mary Chain, Xray Eyeballs hope to render it all their own.

Beat Connection To Release ‘Surf-Noir’ Mini-Album

Photobucket
Electronic pop duo Beat Connection are set to release their latest work, Surf Noir, worldwide on April 12, via Tender Age/Moshi Moshi. The ‘mini-album’ will be available on CD, vinyl, and all digital formats. Surf Noir features eight tracks, five of which are reworked songs- “Sunburn,” “In The Water,” “Wildheart,” “Theme From Yours Truly,” and “Silver Screen”- that have been mastered for the first time. The mini-album is preceded by the worldwide digital release of the previously announced “Silver Screen” single on March 1- also featuring remixes of the title cut by Young Montana and Dreamtrak Diamond Sound, along with a previously unreleased track, “Space Vacation”.

An early version of Beat Connection’s Surf Noir was released in the summer of 2010: a pre-mastered, online demo via the group’s Bandcamp page. While hoping to book shows and gain attention from labels, one of the LP’s tracks, “In The Water,” caught the attention of online sites on both sides of the Atlantic, eventually leading to the band’s signing with Tender Age. Before they knew it, Beat Connection were being lauded by the critics at Pitchfork, NME, The Guardian, KEXP, Consequence of Sound, The Line Of Best Fit, The Stranger, Seattle Times, Artrocker.

In addition to the Surf Noir release, Beat Connection will be playing a handful of dates, which will include an appearance at SXSW in March. Full tour info, as well as the Surf Noir tracklist, below:

New Music: Panda Bear’s “Last Night At The Jetty” From Forthcoming ‘Tomboy’

Panda Bear’s forthcoming album, Tomboy will be released on April 12, 2011. The highly anticipated side project of Animal Collective’s Noah Lennox  ranges from splayed but lyrical noise, florid acoustic arrangements, and guitar-centric psychedelia, he and his bandmates have covered a vast musical territory that blurs the line between pop and experimentalism.

In advance of the release, fans can download”Last Night At The Jetty” here for free.

Fans in New York can attend a free Tomboy listening party at Le Poisson Rouge (158 Bleecker Street) on February 16th at 6pm (rsvp ) or at 7:30 pm (rsvp closed).
