Carolee Rainey’s refreshing new video for “Deal with the Devil” hits the world today. The piece released appropriately on Friday the 13th is just the beginning for the buzzworthy artist. Blending elements of Americana and Folk the video fits the track like a glove. With a haunting undertone that is laced throughout the song and video itself, we caught up with Carolee Rainey for an exclusive edition of Video Voyeur, below!
Tell us the story of this song, why did you choose to visualize this song specifically?

The central theme of this song circles around the sadness we experience when we can’t express our feelings and how limiting life can be when those feelings stay locked up inside our inner selves.I chose to visualize this song because I felt like the earthy and rural land that was available to me to direct this video really lent itself to the poetic nature of the song.
What was the inspiration behind this video (visuals, storyline, etc.)?

The video opens with an early morning shot on the edge of a cliff watching the sun greet the day.  Because this is a vulnerable and soul crying song I felt like the honesty and truth of this first scene set up the story in a way that could intrigue the listener. To start the video off first thing in the morning implied a determination to look at a difficult emotion with renewed strength and clarity.  As the video progresses we go to a fire in the night showing reflection and freedom in sending up reserved feelings with the fire and smoke and then ultimately freeing ourselves to express without fear.

What was the process of making this video?

The process of making this video was that I knew the land really well and was able to come up with which shots I felt would enhance which lyrics and time of day to capture a certain light and  achieve a certain emotion throughout the song.  I directed and edited the video and loved this process because I had spent many years photographing and painting to music and now I was doing the reversal….I basically had the photography (of the land in my head) and was putting it to the music.  We were very fortunate along the way.  We were waiting at the trailhead at 6:00am for enough light to take the hike that would lead us to the edge of the cliff.  Once we saw a little light and were able to see the trail, we ran across the forest to the cliff and were thrilled when we saw it was going to be a fantastic sunrise. It was quite a chilly morning and as I had forgotten my jacket I grabbed a blanket in the back of my car which I spontaneously wore in the video. Another exciting moment was when we had finally gotten the campfire going, all of a sudden from a boring calm night there came a gust of wind from nowhere which really helped make the video more dramatic.  Please let me know if you have any other questions or if I can explain something more clearly.  Thank you so so much for featuring my video. It really means so much!  Hope you enjoy it… All the very best, Carolee Rainey
