Christmas is approaching fast but our Holiday Party still has a few more days to go. Today’s guest at the Modern Mystery Holiday party is Kay Stanton from the incredible Casper and the Cookies!

Best Thing that Happened to You This Year:

The best thing that happened to me this year was probably getting to do a small Japanese tour back in February with the Cookies. It was a pretty amazing trip, despite (or maybe because of) blizzards, small spaces, strange toilets, and crazy rides. We got to play shows in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Kyoto, squeezing in as much sightseeing and eating as possible.

Weirdest Thing that Happened to You This Year:

Weird stuff happens to me all the time, but I suppose the weirdest thing that’s happened to me recently was being bitten by my pet frog, Wayne (yes, he’s named after Wayne Coyne). I guess he mistook my fingers for lunch, latched on and wouldn’t let go. Wayne is an Argentina Horned frog (aka Pac Man frog) and he doesn’t have teeth, exactly, but he has a bony ridge that feels kind of like a series of razor blades. So, I would have been feeling like a fool with this large frog attached to my hand if I hadn’t been shocked by how much it freakin’ hurt. I got him to let go, and my hand was bleeding, and it felt like it was covered in extra sticky snot. Maybe I should do a remake of the Flaming Lips’ ‘Spiderbite Song,’ but call it the ‘Frogbite Song.’

Favorite Holiday Memory:

My favorite holiday memory is of hanging ornaments on my grandparents’ tree in Pennsylvania. I was probably only five or six, but I remember it being dusk outside, but I could still sort of see the snow glowing bluish (and that was a pretty amazing thing to a kid who was born in Georgia). The ornaments were these beautiful glass bells and baubles; some of them had the little starburst cut-outs that some ornaments have. It was warm, and I was with my sister, and the whole family. I’ve had lots of good ones, but that’s still gotta be my favorite.

A Modern Mystery Holiday Party with Jay Ferguson of Sloan

Welcome to another round of a Modern Mystery Holiday Party! Today we have Jay Ferguson, guitarist and vocalist of indie pop Gods, Sloan.

Okay, I personally was super excited when Jay agreed to do this for us. Sloan is one of my all time favorite bands. I have seen them so many times, I’ve actually lost count. Their harmonies are to die for and their melodies are always extremely catchy.

I could lilterally go on for days talking about Sloan’s greatness. This year Sloan released Parallel Play which of course, was jam packed with their signature sound. They will sure be one of our Top 10 Records of the year on here (which will be up next week).

Jay was kind enough to share with us his Top 10 Songs of 2008 and more. Here’s to more Sloan in 2009!

My Top 10 Songs of 2008

1. Jay Arner (of International Falls) – Undiscovered Sun
2. Solange – I Decided (Part 1)
3. Phoenix – Twenty-One One Zero
4. Will Currie & The Country French – Honest People
5. The Bicycles – Once Was Not Enough
6. MGMT – Electric Feel
7. Brent Randall & His Pinecones – Snowdrops
8. Jay Reatard – Always Wanting More
9. Pony Da Look – Wishstick
10. Last Shadow Puppets – Standing Next To Me

Best Thing and Strangest Thing that happened to me this year are probably one and the same:

A dinner with Johnny Marr discussing a wide range of topics including Family Guy and Keith Richards’ moves. A toppermost gentleman.

Fave Holiday Memory:
Any snowball fight circa 1976-78.

A Modern Mystery Holiday Party with Kevin Hilliard of Small Sins

Yes, we still have some more indie greats joining us at our little Modern Mystery Holiday party! Today sharing with us is Kevin Hilliard of the Small Sins!

Small Sins is one of our favorites over here, and we were lucky enough to see and meet Kevin during his New York tour stop with the great Sloan earlier this year. Kevin of course, had been doing his MRCH dj set as ‘Skip Lowe’ for the Sloan shows, which is by far amazing. He even played the Flashing Lights during his set!

Kevin was kind enough to share with us his Top Songs of the Year and other words of wisdom.  We hope there is more Skip Lowe in ’09. Actually, we demand it!

My Top Songs of the Year

1. Dave Marsh – Backstreets (True Love Rules): The best album that you haven’t heard. Why are you still reading this and not buying it? Best lyric of the year: ‘Just another reason/get the fuck outta high school’. Davemarsh.ca

2. Weezer – Troublemaker: Best pop-rock number of the year. Almost negated by ‘Heart Songs’ the worst song Weezer have ever released and almost the worst song of all time.

3. Sloan – Not A Kid Anymore: If only because of the AMAZING clapping and ‘refrigerator thumping’ courtesy of yours truly.

4. Rivers Cuomo – Longtime Sunshine. Written many years ago (so not really from this year) but still a cool tune.

5. AC/DC – Rock ‘N’ Roll Train: I would swim through a river of flames to listen to JUST the amazing drum tracks of Phil Rudd. A true God amongst men. The worst title of all time.

6. Flight Of The Conchords – The Most Beautiful Girl In The Room: Saw the girl (‘Sally’) who played her on the TV show at The Troubadour in LA. H.O.T.T.

** Author’s note: This year only deserves a ‘Top 6’ because of the travesty that is ‘All Summer Long’ by Kid Rock. Holy Shit – this flaming turd hardly counts as a fuckin’ song! It’s like they put a monkey in a cage, threw in a MacBook with ProTools and the monkey shat out this ‘song’. Ring-tone rock! Strictly for ball-capped jocks/retards. You’d think it would take a lot to offend the late great Warren Zevon. Hasn’t he suffered enough? Rollin’ in his grave, the poor bastard.

Heaven help us – fuck you, music industry.

Best thing to happen this year
The birth of Skip Lowe. Google it, people.

Strangest thing to happen this year
The death of Skip Lowe:  See it Here

Best Holiday Memory
The year I got the James Brown Box set. I knew Santa was funky, but that funky? He truly did have a brand new bag.

A Modern Mystery Holiday Party with Jim Hix of Casper and the Cookies

Welcome to another installment of a Modern Mystery Holiday Party! Today our guest is Jim Hix!

Jim Hix is the phenomenal guitar player of indie rock darlings, Casper and the Cookies.  The band will release thier much anticipated new record this winter, which I personally cannot wait for. Just hearing a few of the new tracks off of the record like ‘Little King’ has me excited to hear the rest.

Jim was so very kind to take time out and share with us his ‘Top Eight’ for 2008. Very clever indeed. Here is what Jim had to say.

I agreed to write this a few weeks ago, but I have since forgotten what exactly it was I supposed to write.  I’m pretty sure it was a list of eight, but exactly what the list was escapes me now.  So, what I’ve decided to do instead is just go ahead and make just a general list, my TOP EIGHT THINGS OF 2008!!!!

Now, first, let me put a few qualifiers in here.  Maybe some of this stuff actually came out in 07 or something, I don’t care, this is stuff I was turned on to in 2008 and it felt current enough to me.  I’m going to try and list these things in some kind of order, but for real, it’ll be pretty random.

#8:  The Moldy Peaches on the View!

This was real bizarre on many obvious levels, but I have to admit that there was a part of me that was really happy to see the peaches enjoy a little success from their inclusion on the Juno soundtrack, however late and from such bizarre sources, when they appeared on the view in January.  (These feeling, by the way, would not extend to the horrible travel commercial thing that would feature the horrible cover of the mouldy peaches song including a verse changed to, “let’s go swimming with some dolphins!”)  This first time I saw or heard of the mouldy peaches was in 2001 when they opened for the Strokes when I was working at the forty watt.  Their performance that night was awesome plus they left a CD with the cleaning crew that we would jam while mopping the floor for months to come.  I’m afraid they might be one of those bands that’s really good but spawns a ton of horrible bands of imitators, but 08 was the year they got to jam with whoppi.

#7  Girl Talk releases Feed the Animals:

Man, people are always talking about a record that you can put on and instantly start a party, well, this is IT to me!  I’ve never really been all about mash-ups before, I honestly really just didn’t care, but this is something really genius and special.  The way that the guy mixes genres and eras in such comfortable and effecting ways blew me away.  Oh yeah, and it was free!  How killer is that, not to mention, of the time.

#6  Vampire Weekend delivers their debut record:

There are always these bands that I hear about for weeks and months that I don’t really hear them, but they’re really popular on the blogs, bands like clap your hands and Boris Yeltsin and such stuff, but vampire weekend, for me, really delivered.  I know they’re huge now and probably not at all cool to like anymore, but I thought their debut was excellent and was happy to see them pop up on MTV and enjoy some mainstream exposure.  I agree, I don’t really care for their image, a combination of north east prep, eighties throwback and intellectualism, but the songs are great.

#5  The song Miami Ice by the Icy Demons:

In my perfect world this would have been the biggest hit of the year.  From the crushing opening synth riff, to the delicate harmonies to the pounding interludes, I HEART this song.  It’s one of those songs that from the very first second I heard it, on my friend, Emily’s, myspace page, I loved it and have only grown to appreciate it more over time.

#4  The Internet finally takes over EVERYTHING!:

This year, I really basically abandoned all other forms of media.  All the TV shows I want to watch, old or current, are available almost immediately.    Did you know every episode of Southpark ever is available to be streamed for free online, as is  all the frontline PBS documentaries, and Michael More’s latest film.  Did you know there’s a whole other CNN channel broadcast live on the Internet through the CNN  web page?  I watched that on election night to get my results!  Do you know about sites like hype machine and seeqpod where you can stream songs on demand?  The future is hear, people, and all you need do is take advantage!

#3 MGMT- Oracular Spectacular:

There’s not a lot more to say than this was and is an AMAZING record.  The songs are just so good.  Period.  I almost always wanna listen to them, and this record, produced by the flaming lips’ own David Fridmann, sounds so great!  If you didn’t get this record, I really recommend you give it a try, I think it’s destined to be a classic!

#2 Of Montreal releases the Skeletal Lamping experience onto the world!:

When Of Montreal released Skeletal Lamping earlier this year, some complained that the songs and the sequencing were all over the place.  What they didn’t realize is that the record is only part of the experience.  To truly appreciate Skeletal Lamping, one must see the current Of Montreal live show.  For the uninitiated, let’s just say the show is a bit of a production.  Get on Flickr and look at some pictures, or better yet, watch some live video on youtube.  The pictures and video can’t begin to compare to actually being at a show, but at least you will get an idea of what they’re up to.  I also want to mention the fact that OM released this record in six or seven different formats, experimenting with the business model of selling indie rock records in this post file sharing world we live in now.  The record has been a huge success for them and I’m so proud of them!

#1 Election night 2008

I still find myself smiling uncontrollably when I think about the events of early November.  As September and October crept by, I found myself logging on to CNN.com a couple times a day, then more and more until I was basically on there every ten minutes.  It seemed in those last few months of campaigns that had lasted years, I really had the feeling that, far more than usual, the fate of the world really hung in the balance.  To me, this election really served as an indicator of what direction this country might take for the next thirty years or so.  Obama really did represent change for me, and while my preference was clear immediately, I was very invested in how America, at large, was going to vote.  In the end, we all made history, electing the first African American to the white house, effectively closing a chapter and starting a new one in the book that is the history of this country.  I find Barack Obama to be incredibly intelligent and inspirational and now find myself feeling the very unfamiliar tingle that I assume to be patriotism.  It’s so nice when your country can pleasantly surprise you.  I’m actually looking forward to the next four (eight) years and seeing what progress Obama brings to our nation.

So there you go, my top eight.  I’m sure I forgot some things that should have been on this list, and I’m sure I’m over-hyping some of the things that did make the list, but that was it: my top eight THINGS of 2008.

Of Montreal Peform ‘An Eluardian Instance’ on Letterman

Kevin Barnes

Last night I was super excited waiting for of Montreal to perform on the Late Show with David Letterman. I was like a teen girl waiting for the Beatles to come on the Ed Sullivan show.

of Montreal sort of threw me for a surprise last night. I was actually expecting it to be more like when they performed ‘Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse’ on Conan in 2007. Their performance on Conan was extremely ellaborate with the band trying to put everything they did in their whole live show into one song….which is a hell of a lot.  They pulled off the song great, but it was a lot to look at during one song.

of Montreal did not do this last night. I think the band pulled off their performance on Letterman perfectly. It was just enough OM pizazz that they needed for one song. They came out with the gold Buddhas and then continued on with the paper mache man towards the middle and end. The band played beautifully last night and everyone in the band looked super sharp, especially Kevin in his purple ensemble. ‘An Eluardian Instance’ was completely flawless and amazing last night, and even by the end of it, Letterman looked like he was actually amused.

Watch of Montreal ‘An Eluardian Instance’ live on Letterman

A Modern Mystery Holiday Party with Ahmed Gallab of Of Montreal and Caribou

Welcome to the second installment of our Modern Mystery Holiday Party!

Today we hear from Ahmed Gallab, drummer extraordinaire from of Montreal and Caribou.  2008 was a busy year for the band, including the release of the new album titled ‘Skeletal Lamping’ and an extensive worldwide tour.

Ahmed joined of Montreal this year primarily as their drummer but WOW, can he do so much more. He also spreads the love of pizza with all who come in his path.  Ahmed seemed to have added more energy to the already super energetic of Montreal on stage. The Modern Mystery crew was more than excited when he agreed to answer our year end questions for us. We can’t wait to see more of Ahmed in 0f Montreal in 2009!

The Best Thing that Happened to Me This Year:
Tour, Tour, Tour!
I was probably the luckiest kid on Earth this year. I got to play in both Caribou and of Montreal! What an exciting thing to do! I have made so many friends and seen so much in such little time! Here’s to another year of touring!

The Strangest Thing that Happened to Me This Year:
Losing everything!
I lost my driver’s license, passport, phone (i eventually found it!), a hat, four toothbrushes and loads of other small things! it’s so weird!

My Favorite Holiday Memory:
My sisters and I would stay up and watch every single new years TV show and then run around our neighborhood banging pots and pans at midnight yelling “Happy New Year, DUDES!”. I always loved New Years Eve more than Christmas. It always had this freshness to it. Everyone is so excited to finish off one year and start a new one.

My New Years Resolution of 2009:
*Put out two Sinkane records!!! The follow up my last record, “Color Voice” , entitled “Sinkane”, will be released in March 2009 and I hope to record another record for a late 2009 release!
*Tour ALL THE TIME!!!
*Learn to surf!

of Montreal will be appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman Tonight, December 18th, at 11:35est Time. Ahmed and the band will be performing ‘An Eluardian Instance’. Be sure to catch it!
