I’m in a very Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin mood over here today. The boys are starting to line up some tour dates for early December, including a show at Brooklyn’s Bell House on December 7th. What a lovely holiday treat this will be! In other news, Polyvinyl Records recently posted that we should be on the lookout for a compiliation of the band’s unreleased, b-sides and alternate version songs due out sometime soon. This edition of Secondhand Sunday is the video for “Pangea” which reminds me so much of autumn and falling leaves and everything being so beautiful. There is nothing more comforting on a cold fall day than some SSLYBY. Enjoy!
Almost a year ago we started this little blog and quite frankily never knew how much it would take off. To celebrate our 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY this coming September 4th, we are giving back something to our fans. Just recieved a message from Mr. Phil Dickey of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin himself alerting us that there is a new video for ‘Glue Girls’!. The video is packed with action (you’ll see what I mean) and adds to the catalog of great and amusing SSLYBY videos. The video is actually ‘unoffical’ as it was made by two friends of the band, Brooke and Matt for a local video competition. Kudos to them though! This is definatly their most theatric video to date. There has been a talk for quite some time in the Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin camp about a studio version of ‘Cardinal Rules,’ a song the band had written about their hometown minor league baseball team, The Springfield Cardinals. The band have been playing the ever poppy tune at recent shows and it instantly became a favorite amongst fans. Will the tune be on the new record? No word on that yet, but there is word of SSLYBY working on their third record as we speak. The plans after that are to go back on tour, and we just can’t wait!

Ah yes its already the 4th of July tomorrow and let the picnics begin. The crew here at Modern Mystery put together a mix for your ‘Indie-pendance’ day. Whether you are heading to the beach, barbecuing some hamburgers or getting drunk by your pool, we hope you listen to it on your celebration. We tried to keep the songs ‘summer’ feeling. That makes sense, doesn’t it?
Ah there is nothing like springtime when your favorite indie pop band rolls into town. The Mercury Lounge in New York City last week was packed for the highly anticipated Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin show, and we expected no different. Blending recent songs from their second release Pershing and their first Broom, the band did not miss a beat. I’m not sure I’ve personally ever seen a band so flawless, so ‘dead on’ with every little note. Even when Phil Dickey’s cowbell started moving around and giving him trouble, he may have laughed, but it didn’t bother him one bit. When John Robert Cardwell broke a guitar string mid song, he just kept going and smiled. Kids, that is what real rock and roll is about. Enjoying every second of it. Even though the SSLYBY boys haven’t been around for an extreme length of time, they play better than any band their senior I’ve seen.
John Robert’s voice is just as perfect onstage as on the records and the same goes for when Phil takes the mic. The blending sounds of Phil, Will Knauer and Jonathan James are nothing less than brilliant. The band is really meant for each other because they manage to compliment the other players so well. Thats a rare find.
Some of the night’s highlights were Anne Elephtant, Glue Girls, Think I Wanna Die, We Can Win Missouri! and of course, Modern Mystery (hmm why would we like that song?! It was really sweet of the band to play it for us!) They also played a few new songs for the upcoming record, one in particular called ‘All Hail Dracula’. You can’t even imagine how good this song is.
If you haven’t seen Someone Still Love You Boris Yeltsin live yet you are doing yourself a horrible deed. In other words, jump on the bandwagon! Do yourself another favor and pick up their records. They will change yr life…or at least impress the hell out of you.
