Video Voyageur: 3Qs with Aliza Hava

Aliza Hava is an award-winning singer/songwriter whose music reflects the deepest levels of love, life, and positive social change. Aliza interlaces the elements; earth and sky, fire and water. Her transcendent voice recreates the mystical tone of Stevie Nicks, the raw soul of Janis Joplin, and the energizing strength of Florence Welch. With her award-winning infusion of folk, rock, pop, and R&B, Aliza heals the tiny forgotten bits of ourselves while rekindling our memories, setting our feet on the path back home and calling us to rise into our best versions of ourselves. We caught up with Aliza as she shares her inspiration for her new video “More Than Anything.”

  1. Tell us the story of this song, why did you choose to visualize this song specifically in this way?

The video was filmed on the Santa Cruz coastline on the Monterey Bay. The videography was done by Wooden Mirror Productions, and cinematographer Matt Widman. Asher Kaplan filmed the harmonica footage separately at Natural Bridges Beach and I did all the video editing myself. As an indie artist, I’ve been working on up-leveling my media skillset so I can bring more creative visions to life. This is the first video I’ve ever edited with all original footage and I’m really happy with how it turned out!

  2. What was the inspiration behind this video (visuals, storyline, etc.)?

With the visuals, I wanted to show the dynamics of searching for lost love, almost in a dream-like state with the tension between longing and hopefulness. The song has an upbeat vibe and so being on the beach during a beautiful day and then walking into the sunset captures that interplay. As well, the harmonica is a symbol for that love, played on the song and performed in the video by LA based musician Bergen Moore. He and I met while I was on tour in India. He was on a year long motorcycle trek and we met two days before my trip ended.  We became instant friends and the first time we ever played the song together was during a jam session at a hostel we were both staying at in New Delhi.  We then kept having synchronistic encounters in San Francisco and New York, which is how he ended up recording on the track.
  3. What was the process of making this video?

The song came to me in a dream. In the dream, I was onstage playing a song I’d never heard before with a full band and a ripping harmonica riff. When I woke up, I was like, “what a cool song. Who wrote that?” And my creative muse was like, “you did! Go get a pen and write it down now!” Boom, it was born. Bergen was the first musician to ever jam on the riff in real life and he nailed it the first time, which is why it was so cool that he ended up being part of the recording and filming process.

The guitar in the video is a 7-string, fanned-fret custom acoustic made by legendary luthier, Jeff Traugott. I met Jeff a few months after I had moved to Santa Cruz at the Santa Cruz Luthier Exhibit. We started talking about guitars and ended up becoming friends. He loaned me this for the making of the video. His guitars are world classhttps://www.traugottguitars.com/
