Wilco’s New Album, Already Online

Sorry for the short of posts this week.  Its been interesting to say the least. Back to business though. Alt Country grandfathers, Wilco, have put their newest album titled ‘Wilco (the album)’ up on their site to stream. Yes its a full month before the record comes out and is a very lovely treat for us all. The record drops June 30th on Nonesuch Records. Listening to the stream, I think it is one of my favorite Wilco albums to date. And talking about dates, check out the tour dates on their page. Chances are they are coming to a town near you…with Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley band in tow.

Happy Mother’s Day!

A shoutout to all the Mothers out there. Hope you are having a very Happy Mother’s Day and your family is taking care of you.

Of course the day couldn’t be complete without a song. Check out a find from my personal music collection; Black Bear’s ‘Whistler’s Mother’s Day’. If your mom likes whistling, this song is for you….there are words too though in case you were wondering.

The Shins to Release New Record

Its been quite some time since we’ve gotten a new record from The Shins, but they’re back. James Mercer and Co. are on the brink of releasing a new album but things have certainly changed. For one, the band will release the album on Mercer’s own label, Aural Apothecary, having split with their former label Sub Pop.  Mercer also let two of the original members go, keyboardist Marty Crandall and drummer Jesse Sandoval, stating that he wanted to take the band in a new direction. ‘I started to have production ideas that I wanted to do that basically required some other people,’ Mercer recently told Pitchfork.

The guys have been replaced by Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse and Ron Lewis from The Fruit Bats. Man, seems like a rough day to be in The Shins. Though the band is currently doing a few tour dates, the new album still won’t be released until early next year. Mercer describes the new songs as very ‘up tempo’ and less depressing than their other records. I guess some good did come out of this.

Ryan Adams Has a Youtube Channel Now? Our Life is Complete!

Though we still haven’t gotten over the fact that Ryan Adams has ‘retired’ from making music, at least we still get to see the altcountry rocker online. Not only is he chatting it up about his new website project(s), http://ryanada.ms , but he also gives us some stripped down live performances from his house, complete with stuffed animal intro (be sure to check out his video of ‘Crossed Out Name’. Classic.  Ryan also promises some unreleased Werewolph tracks on his new site, which if we recall was his fake ‘hard rock’ project.

Stephen Malkmus Talks to Pitchfork about The Jicks’ Future

Though Stephen Malkmus seems in denial that a Pavement reunion will ever happen, at least his future with The Jicks is stable. Malkmus recently did an interview with Pitchfork talking about the near end of the Pavement reissues, The Jicks in general and the dreaded ‘So when is Pavement going to reunite?’ question. 2009 actually marks the 20th year anniversary of Pavement’s first EP, Slay Tracks (1933-1969). Its so hard to believe they started that long ago….though Stephen Malkmus, you’ve never looked so young.

Video: Pains of Being Pure at Heart, “Young Adult Friction”

We always love a good Pains of Being Good at Heart Video, and their newest for ‘Young Adult Friction’ takes the cake as our favorite so far. The video has a nice homemade look to it. Save the frills for someone else please. The overall feel of the video makes it feel like it was shot in the 70’s, and the singing skeleton is quite a nice touch. You can tell the band had a great time making this video. You’ll have a great time watching it as well.
