Blitzen Trapper ‘God and Suicide’

I  may be a little late to the Blitzen Trapper bandwagon, but hey, at least i’m on it. ‘Furr’ , the band’s first release for Sub Pop blends 70’s rock and roll soul with an acoustic vibe, and somehow reminds me of a more upbeat Simon and Garfunkel. Comparing them to Fleet Foxes wouldn’t be difficult either. The two bands are made to go together it seems. Though they can be easily compared at times, Blitzen Trapper truly has a voice and sound of their own.  One of my favorite tracks off the new record is titled ‘God and Suicide’. Singer Eric Earley’s vocals are beautifully smooth on this surprisingly upbeat song.  Its easy to become addicted to Blitzen Trapper. Trust me.

The Shins to Release New Record

Its been quite some time since we’ve gotten a new record from The Shins, but they’re back. James Mercer and Co. are on the brink of releasing a new album but things have certainly changed. For one, the band will release the album on Mercer’s own label, Aural Apothecary, having split with their former label Sub Pop.  Mercer also let two of the original members go, keyboardist Marty Crandall and drummer Jesse Sandoval, stating that he wanted to take the band in a new direction. ‘I started to have production ideas that I wanted to do that basically required some other people,’ Mercer recently told Pitchfork.

The guys have been replaced by Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse and Ron Lewis from The Fruit Bats. Man, seems like a rough day to be in The Shins. Though the band is currently doing a few tour dates, the new album still won’t be released until early next year. Mercer describes the new songs as very ‘up tempo’ and less depressing than their other records. I guess some good did come out of this.

Chad Vangaalen “Moltin Light”

Chad Vangaalen is one of the most beautiful musicians that the world has to offer. His words are flawless.  His voice evokes such dreary emotion.  As most know by now, Vangaalen does all of his own artwork, especially for his music videos. His art is just as exceptional has his music. A new favorite of ours at Modern Mystery is his animated video for ‘Moltin Light’ which is one of the most haunting tracks we’ve ever heard. It will send chills down your spine everytime you see it.
