Broken Social Scene Reveals New LP Details

Somehow five years have passed since Canadian indie supergroup Broken Social Scene graced us with their last record. Now, the band is back and ready to roll. Releasing their newest record on their longtime home of Arts & Crafts Records on May 4th. The yet to be titled album is possibly going to blow your socks right off. As we all know BSS has a revolving door of artists that come in and out of the group, six key members are currently holding down the main fort. Kevin Drew, Andrew Whiteman, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin and Sam Goldberg.

Who else is on board you may ask? Well, get ready for a mouthful of artists. Leslie Feist, Amy Milan, Evan Cranley, Emily Haines, Jimmy Shaw, Jason Collett, Ohad Benchetrit, John Crossingham, Marty Kinack, Julie Penner, Leon Kingstone, and Lisa Lobsinger are all back in action. The list doesn’t end there. There are several outside contributors making their way onto the album including Sea and Cake’s Sam Prekop, Tortoise’s Doug McCombs, Pavement’s Spiral Stairs, Death From Above 1979 singer-drummer Sebastien Grainger, the Weakerthans’ Jason Tait amongst others. John McEntire of Tortoise and the Sea and Cake produced the new record in Chicago and Toronto with the band last year. Phew. Tour dates are already starting to gain momentum including with one with Pavement…so check them out below!

Pavement to Release Greatest Hits Album

This year should be deemed the “Year of Pavement.” Every indie kid’s dream is that one day the classic band would reunite and of course, now that it’s happening and they’re going on a worldwide tour, what possibly could get us more into the mood? Matador Records has just the thing to hold us over until then. The label will be releasing Quarantine The Past: The Best Of Pavement on March 9 and will feature 23 songs spanning the band’s 10 year career.  The album will be a double LP and CD, and the treble kicker is that Matador is making the fans guess what the tracklisting is, with the exception of the first song, “Gold Soundz.” If you figure out the right songs on the record,  you have a chance to win some awesome prizes like a trip to see Pavement play in Central Park, New York City! Check out the concert details below and head to Matador Records to enter!

From Matador

We are holding a Guess The Track Listing Contest. The album contains 23 tracks, all previously released, and the first track is “Gold Soundz” (MP3 of remastered version below). Prizes will be awarded as follows:

FIRST PRIZE for the track listing closest to the actual track listing
SECOND PRIZE for the most imaginative track listing
FOUR RUNNERS-UP in either of the above two categories (4 runner-up prizes total)

First prize will be a pair of tickets, with flights and hotel rooms, to see Pavement at Central Park Summerstage on Tuesday, September 21, 2009. Plus a complete set of Pavement Matador 12″ vinyl.

Second prize will be having your track listing pressed up in a special limited-edition vinyl double LP for Record Store Day (April 17). You will receive 5 copies of your best of selection. Plus a complete set of Pavement Matador 12″ vinyl.

Runner-up prizes will be complete sets of Pavement Matador 12″ vinyl.

…A few more clues: 3 pre-Matador tracks are included, plus one song that originally came out on a compilation. Every Matador album is represented, plus Watery, Domestic.

Deadline for entries is 2 weeks from today: TUESDAY, JANUARY 19.

Entry is open to anyone worldwide, with the exception of those listed under the contest rules and restrictions.

Secondhand Sunday: Pavement ‘Gold Soundz’

Today’s Secondhand Sunday is dedicated to PAVEMENT. Okay we are ridiculously excited, like most, about their upcoming reunion tour. We all know it can lead to more things, and if not, we all have the chance to experience them live if we missed it in the 90’s. Myself included. Though most of us thought this day would never happen, and if it did, it would be about 10 years from now.  What is totally odd about this reunion is the fact that the past couple of weeks I have felt it coming. I’ve been listening to all of my old Pavement records, and only that. Most of the Modern Mystery staff has been talking lately about ‘What if Pavement reunited? Maybe we could stalk them out and talk them into it!’ The second part was just a joke (as I didn’t think we were going to Stephen Malkmus’ house anytime soon), but we just thought it was something that should happen.

On this note, I want to tell you about a new venture we have started. As of September 22, 2009 we are starting Project Pavement on Twitter. What in the world is this you ask? Well to celebrate the countdown to the first Pavement reunion show scheduled for September 22, 2010, we are going to leak any news we can get our hands on as things are updated. Also, every day will be a new Pavement lyric to get you into the vibe of things. Ist rad.

Watch this week’s Secondhand Sunday, Pavement ‘Gold Soundz’. It just fits….Go back to those gold sounds…

BIGGEST NEWS EVER! PAVEMENT REUNION TOUR IS ON!

KIDS IT’S FINALLY HAPPENING!!! Just confirmed last night that PAVEMENT IS PLAYING 4 NIGHTS AT CENTRAL PARK SUMMERSTAGE in 2010 as part as the PAVEMENT REUNION TOUR. We all knew it would happen someday when the Godfathers of Indie would reunite, but now knowing it’s actually for real is just beyond our wildest imagination. The band is also rumored to be playing All Tomorrow’s Parties and Coachella in 2010. We have a feeling this tour is going to be HUGE. Summer Babe here we come!!!
