lol it's funny because this picture is from green shoelace

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead (Trail of Dead for short) is an indie rock band from Austin, Texas, known for their wild, energetic live performances. They’ve released five solid albums since 1998 and one fantastic album, 2002’s Source Tags & Codes. Their new album, Tao of the Dead, drops on February 8th, and the band will celebrate with a record release show at Littlefield on the same day. Conrad Keeley, the band’s frontman, is also a talented artist whose work not only graces the front of the album but will also be on display at the release show. Check out a clip from a new documentary about Keeley, listen to two of their new songs, and try to win tickets to the Littlefield show at Brooklyn Vegan!

The Morning Benders @ Webster Hall, NYC – November 18, 2010

The Morning Benders are a band I first encountered at The Market Place Hotel (R.I.P.) in Brooklyn supporting Surfer Blood (also that evening playing alongside bands such as Grooms, Turbo Fruits, and Beach Fossils) and I’ll admit at first I wasn’t impressed, but there was a certain charm their stage presence put out that has stuck with me. The band not only seemed incredibly young but ripe for the journey most aspiring musicians cannot even comprehend, fast forward to where we are today, the bands sophomore record Big Echo is destined to make many top 10 list, they have already supported Ra Ra Riot, White Rabbits, MGMT, Yeasayer, and The Black Keys, and after all of that the band have set out on their first headlining tour. Not bad for the four little guys who played Market Hotel earlier this year.

The bands performance really surprised me. Its unbelievable how much a band can change in the span of a year but The Morning Benders make it a feat to show that they’ve been doing nothing but learning. Chris Chu fronts the band with a relaxed talent but isn’t afraid to get into his tunes, while his brother Jon Chu backs him up with a rhythm guitar which could be named precision. After the third track Chris Chu proclaimed “Earlier this year we released an album called Big Echo! We’re going to play a lot of tracks from it to thank all of you for the year we had!” I was lucky enough to capture their show at Webster Hall (along with photos of opening act Twin Sister).

Photos from the show can be viewed here.

BRAIDS Make Lemonade

It takes a lot for four best friends from Alberta, Canada to convince each other to skip college and move across the country to Montreal. At only eighteen, the music geniuses BRAIDS  released a  self recorded/self produced album known as Native Speaker.

With its single “Lemonade” now debuted on Stereogum, new fans can’t wait for the LP’s release on January 18th. The critics can’t wait either, as Filter magazine described the album as “an amalgam of feminine assertion and unabashed lust.”

Illustrated as brilliant in detail and  luminous structure, none of the songs on Native Speaker ever come in under four minutes and most average about six. Such pattern has not bored listeners, but only seemed to sugarcoat the already radiant sound. Leading up to the release, the band will be playing the following shows. Catch them in your city!

11/18 – Cabaret Du Mile End WIth Land Of Talk   Montreal, QC

So Percussion & Dan Deacon – The “brilliant” (New York Times), “astonishing and entrancing” (Village Voice) quartet So Percussion is joined by electronic iconoclast Dan Deacon, whose visceral and sophisticated work has inspired a near-cult following by “connect[ing] the loops and repetition of dance music to the patterns of 20th-century classical Minimalism” (New York Times), in a series of new collaborative works. The quartet will also play arrangements of Deacon’s songs and selections from their own vast and varied output.

The Tall Tall Trees Announce November 20th Fundraiser in NYC

The Tall Tall Trees will be celebrating their Kickstarter Fundraiser at The Mercury Lounge on November 20th starting at 8 PM. Harlem folk rocker’s goal is to raise $12,000 to record their sophmore release. The band features Mike Savino on vocals and banjo, Kyle Sanna on guitar, Benjamin Campbell on bass and Mathias Kunzli but this is not your traditional folk group. Through the use of effects pedals on banjo and amplification they have managed to achieve a fresh sound that incorporates a mix of American Folk and rock elements with Brazilian and African music. The Tall Tall Trees musical chemistry and energetic live performances allow them to re-invent their songs on a nightly basis. They have spent years collaborating with such diverse acts as Moby, Yo Yo Ma and Vieux Farka Toure and can be compared to fellow NY acts such as Vampire Weekend and Dirty Projectors. For more information on The Tall Tall Trees visit their MYSPACE.

Tickets to The Mercury Lounge show are $10 and are available HERE

Hopewell Announce Live Album

Hopewell have been rocking eardrums for the better part of a decade with their fuzz-pop sound, so it’s a bit odd that they’re just deciding to release their first live album now.

Luckily for us, the live album , Hopewell Live has been split into two volumes. Volume I features the band as they are today, a gigantic creature with two drummers and multiple instrumentalists. The band used recordings from their three-night Truck Festival America performance from earlier this year.

On the contrary, Volume II set to be released early next year, hearkens back to a youthful Hopewell. It features more of the band’s earlier material and was recorded by the band’s original lineup.

Coincidentally, the band has also announced that they’re going on tour with The Dandy Warhols this fall. You can check them out live here.
