Ben Heffernan Goes the Distance on New Single

Ben Heffernan’s upcoming third EP, drive in movies, sees the Canadian Folk Music Award nominated singer-songwriter move into new sonic and lyrical territory. drive in movies is a personal, cinematic collection of songs that chronicles key events in the life of a teenager: falling in love for the first time, losing someone for the first time, frustration with the world around you, and the speed in which one’s young life tends to change.

While “Drive In Movies” acknowledges Heffernan’s roots in what he describes as “classic singer-songwriter folk-pop”, it also reflects his love for 80s-inspired maximalist pop/rock productions and widescreen, stadium-sized ballads. The songs are neatly tied together through the use of vintage movie samples, which lends the EP a conceptual, unified feel.

Video Voyageur: 3Qs with Zack King

Out in the suburbs of Minnesota, the winters are long, harsh, and biting. However, it all feels a little warmer with local singer-songwriter Zack King around. Life is simpler out there, and he, armed with an acoustic guitar and a heart of gold, just wants everyone to stop for a moment and take it all in. A fanatic for ‘90s nostalgia a la Matchbox Twenty, Zack toyed around with music his whole life before turning it into a professional pursuit after graduating college. Like many, he found himself feeling lost after graduation, and turned to his music to confront those feelings. which is evident in his new single and video for “Take It Away.” Captivating from start to finish, King brings to life music that evokes emotion. We had the honor of catching up with Zack for an exclusive interview below.

Tell us the story of this song, why did you choose to visualize this song specifically?

Have you ever felt that awful, lingering, gut wrenching feeling from a breakup? ‘Take It Away’ brings the listener on an emotional journey sharing how it feels when you can’t get that person out of your head. “Every night I lie awake thinking about her and what we used to have. Tossing and turning in my sleep… She’s the only thing on my mind. What do I have to do to get these memories out of my head? Someone please take it away.”

I chose to visualize this song because there’s so much emotion behind the story and the lyrics. Constantly replaying those memories in your head of all those nights you shared and those moments you shared. That’s why it was perfect to shoot one of the scenes in a bedroom. Lying awake, tossing and turning, throwing a tantrum because you can’t get her out of your head.

What was the inspiration behind this video(visuals, storyline, etc.)?

Scene 1: We wanted to give as much interpretation as possible with ‘Take It Away’ and what it feels like going through a breakup. That’s why we had a projector in the background with videos of couples spending time together. After a breakup, it’s so easy to replay all of those memories in your head over and over again, that’s why we had the images behind me – showing that those were in the past. At the end of the video, it shows me walking away from the screen – symbolizing I’m moving on from her and all of those haunting memories.

Scene 2: I wanted to reenact how most people feel when they go through a breakup or tough time in their lives. Laying awake, tossing and turning in your sleep, and trying to get those feelings out of your head. We made sure to make the scene capture the frustration I am going through – I’m screaming, throwing blankets and pillows, and overall giving the audience insight on how it feels to be going through a breakup. The red lights in this scene helped capture the frustration I’m going through, and what it feels like to be going through a breakup.

What was the process of making this video?

First, we went to Taylor Sound in Hopkins, MN where they have a big open white room with a screen. We spent half of a day recording Scene 1 – making sure the video lined up with the correct lyrics and overall the scene stylistically fit the song.

Second, we went to my home to shoot the bedroom scene. We rented a fog machine and bright blue and red lights to capture the emotion of the song. The fog machine added a distinct feel to the scene, giving the viewer a sense of anger and heartbreak. After 10 hours of filming, changing ideas, and overall direction of the video, we finally got the look we wanted for both scenes, leading up to the release of the music video.

Jeremy Dion Captivates on “Blowin’ Smoke”

Raised on a diet of Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, and John Denver, Jeremy was steeped in the soaring harmonies and technical guitar playing of the masters. Later gravitating towards rock & roll and bluegrass, Dion developed his unique “Mile High Americana” sound of contemporary folk and acoustic rock that is engaging, passionate, and honest. With a present voice, versatile guitar skills, and the insight of a therapist, Dion is emerging as a formidable songwriter.

With three albums – and his fourth on the way to be released in 2021 – plus countless gigs under his belt, Dion has proven himself as an artist. Sharpe & Dion is Jeremy’s 4th independent studio release, being released under his personal label, Inner View Records. It is the first album of Dion’s to have two musicians – Dion himself and his long-time musical friend, Peter Sharpe. “This album was also different in that we tracked everything live, and did very little editing and overdubbing, doing our best to capture the authentic, raw, acoustic sound of us playing songs together in the living room” Dion states about the album. Dion believes that this work is his best work yet and captures where he is in life perfectly. It is able to show the twenty years of friendship and growth between Sharpe and Dion as they went on their journeys through life as therapists and musicians.

Jeremy Dion’s new single “Blowin’ Smoke” is out now via digital outlets.

Elyza Bleau’s Newest single, “Apparition,” is the Anthem of the Modern World

Elyza Bleau’s newest single, “Apparition,” is taken from part of her upcoming EP, Haunted. The song is a very personal one for her that will entice you with every listen.

Echoing the vibes of U2, but with more edge, her music is about her family’s legacy and more broadly about one’s own legacy not being able to be who you want to be due to your family’s expectations or ideas of who you should be.

“I was really inspired by this need to trace our heritage in the zeitgeist and the expectations that families and cultures can have around people falling in line with it, even if your path is very different,” says Elyza. It’s about not fitting a mold that fits your ancestry and the hurdles that come with that.”

Elyza was basically in a personal lockdown before March of 2020. She had moved away from the city into a bungalow on the beach and was working 2 full-time jobs. That fierce independence led Elyza to show up to her guitar every day in January. After 4 years of struggling to write, she wrote 21 songs in 30 days. Planning to make an EP she had spent the last month and a half choosing the best ones to craft. And then…all hell broke loose on earth.

Working from home, she was able to keep focusing on the EP. One day at a time, one “you got this” at a time. The songs were feeling heavy, carrying all of the burdens that come with carrying a lifetime of anger and sadness thus far.

Suddenly, she had her guitar in hand and wrote a little ditty of a melody around those words. And then she picked more words from her diary and wove a tale around her actual story. It was rich with the feeling of travel in the 1930’s, of a girl still in college going on a trip to a city she lived in for over a decade to see family we didn’t know we had. There was sadness, longing, excitement, and thrills. All told in the words of a girl who was just along for the ride.

The song quickly replaced another as the 4th song on Haunted. But it changed the meaning of the whole EP and helped me to brighten the other 3 songs. Yes, we may carry around a heavy weight from our past, but we also carry around the laughter and silliness that lighten the load.
