At the top of our December Playlist is “Wild Thing” by VAVÁ, also known as Vanessa Wheeler, and we absolutely cannot stop playing this track on repeat, it’s almost like we are in a competition for who can stream this track the most. Spoiler Alert: we win. We could not have dreamed up a more perfect artist, it’s almost as if Daughter, Maggie Rogers and Sara Bareilles all had a love child.
Starting out with an earthy, thundering intro, that reminds us a bit of Massive Attack’s Teardrop (you may know it from the theme song of House M.D.), Vanessa’s vocals come into the track like a rainstorm, pouring herself all over the track and completely taking over it with a freedom we didn’t know could feel in just a few short seconds.
When asked about the track, Vanessa describes the writing process of this particular song, as doing something she had never really done. “Wild Thing started by sitting down in the quiet of every morning for about a week and free-writing lyrics without my guitar…I ended up with a sort of love song via little scenic letters to a part of myself that I kept hidden out of fear.” This track feels like it is a conversation with a younger version of herself, but one she has in a maternal tone, about the sexual shame she felt, being a gay kid.
This track is for all of the people in the LGBTQ+ community, who ever felt like they had to label themselves, and publicly announce themselves for the comfort of others. And a realization that, even through doing that, some people will still never understand. We are so excited to hear more from this artist, and will be sure to keep an eye out for her.
Machisma Militia is a female fronted rock band. We are a synergy of creative performers, musicians, and video professionals dedicated to communicating messages of equality, compassion, and self-respect. Their newest song and video for “We Are the Change,” bring the project to life, as their energy and message fills the room and your headphones. We had the honor to catch up with the group, as we dive into their latest video, below!
Tell us the story of this song, why did you choose to visualize this song specifically in this way?
Amidst political unrest, people around the world are taking a stand for kindness, equality and positive change. We are the Change is a Neo-80s rock anthem designed to inspire us all to take that stand together.
What was the inspiration behind this video (visuals, storyline, etc.)?
Overall, the song lyrics provide the video storyboard. The images in verse 1 are angry men yelling in a political rally and politicians who don’t appear to have our best interest at heart. The shots of the musicians are weaved into each scene.
Verse 1 When we’re tired by so many angry voices
trying their best to take away all our choices
They block our freedom with their lies
We’ve got to keep our eyes on the prize
Rise UP! Rewrite the rules.
Chorus 1 provides a relief to all the anger with images of peace and hope for the future.
Chorus 1
Be the Change, we’ve got to Be the Change –
Make the world as good as it can be, YEAH
Be the Change, we’ve got to Be the Change
WE! WE ARE THE CHANGE
Verse 2 continues with images of angry and stressed out people. Followed by hope for the future. Again, the images follow the lyrics closely
Verse 2
Stubborn people fill us with worry and stress
Shouting words that put our faith to the test
There’s a vision waiting deep inside (There’s a vision)
that wants to be our spiritual guide (Come on and guide us!)
Telling us to turn things around! (We better turn it around!)
Chorus 2 – continues on with the band interspersed between images of people from all walks of life displaying hope for the future.
BRIDGE (Guitar solo) The guitarist is a world renown international touring artist, so we are showing her off here while we pepper in images of pollution and climate change.
Chorus 3 – continues on with the band interspersed between images of people from all walks of life displaying hope for the future.
END TAG – Images display the people who are confident and working on changing the world together because We are the Change.
Change, Change, Change
Ad libs

What was the process of making this video?
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we were unable to shoot everyone at the same time. So, I shot each band member using Zoom and two cameras. Using our storyboard, we licensed stock images and edited them in, to tell the story.

Panjandrum.ai Inc has been developing an avatar girl music group called AVTR®, named after its characters Amaya Rush, Valentina Verse, Tera Bang, and Ryda Rhymes. Helsinki Fashion Week is the first time the avatars have appeared in public to support sustainable fashion. The avatars have participated in several of the designer shows. The first appearance consisted of the avatars appearing to be born as video game characters, then model some performance looks, and are transported into the scene of their first music video for “Queen,” where they are engaged in a life-sized chess battle with an unseen human opponent.
Greg Cockerill is currently in the process of recording a new full-band studio album, “No, Never Alone” is the first offering from those sessions. Inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic and self-produced by Cockerill, the track reiterates that while we may be physically apart, we are all in this struggle together.
Born in Montreal, raised in Alberta, and now living in Toronto, Greg Cockerill’s music is a unique expression of Canadian Roots. After receiving a degree in composition/arranging and jazz guitar, he found himself inevitably drawn back to his first love of rock, blues, and country music.
Bringing you 90s nostalgia with a 2020 attitude, FAVVKES (pronounced “fox”) is an exciting, emerging Canadian artist and songwriter. Hard at work on her solo debut, she unapologetically touches on sensitive subject matter surrounding mental health. Her songs deliver strong messages on what it means to deal with social anxiety, depression, acceptance and inclusivity. FAVVKES’ brand new single, “Black Dove,” was inspired by her journey through life, getting through all the hardships and using them as fuel for success and personal growth. It’s about taking all that pain, and turning it into love – what else are we going to do to survive?
