CMJ’s official Marathon site doesn’t give us any clue to who is playing where during the fest which kicks off on the 19th. That doesn’t mean OhMyRockness didn’t spill the beans though.

….yep and our little heads just exploded. Two of the hottest bands to come out of the indie scene in quite some time have announced that they will be doing a co-headlining tour in the fall with each other. The Drums, who started gaining attention at CMJ 2008, and Surfer Blood, who started being a blogger’s dream at CMJ 2009 (Yea we did their first ever interview. Jealous?), are taking the nation by storm for about two solid months. Hipsters everywhere are celebrating we’re sure of it. Since their CMJ hype, The Drums have become one of the most talked about band in the UK and Surfer Blood have become the most notable band of the year with their debut, Astrocoast (Kanine).
The tickets will be on sale TOMORROW MORNING, and they are expected to go fast. This may be the hottest show of the fall. The Drums and Surfer Blood hit up Webster Hall in NYC on October 22nd. This does sound like a CMJ showcase to us. Why not? It’s what launched both of them in a big way. Surfer Blood is also set to play NYC on October 19th, the first day of CMJ. Hmmmm…..

Why did it take me so long to review this album? Well I was too busy enjoying it, that’s why.
The Morning Benders have taken a new approach on their sophomore record, Big Echo (+1/Roughtrade). With producer and Grizzly Bear cohort Chris Taylor in tow, the band went into the studio last year to record an album that has finally launched their career into the spotlight.
While their first record Talking Through Tin Cans (+1) brought out the sweet, sugary, indie pop side of the band, this time they are headed in a different direction. This is indeed four guys who have grown up drastically since the last time they went into the studio. The songs show a more mature side of the group and it seems natural and effortless.
The album opens up with the first two singles, “Excuses,” and “Promises.” Both are only the beginning of what is to come on this record. If you were lucky enough to catch singer Chris Chu’s solo performance at CMJ 2009, you were able to see some of these songs including a special teenaged filled background vocal performance of “Excuses.”
“Wet Cement,” brings a bit of the first record in with it. It’s a very mellow and adorable song to say the least. One thing that stands out even more on this album is Chu’s voice. It is dreamy, smooth and flawless. This is more often than not hard to find these days. It’s as if his voice has the capability to bring you back into the 60’s. One of my personal favorite tunes on the record is “Cold War (Nice Clean Fight),” which clocks in under the two minute mark. This is a stomp your feet, clap your hands along song with it’s infectious beat.
“Pleasure Sighs,” “Hand Me Downs,” and “Mason Jar,” bring out a more experimental sound in the band. A little pyschadelic if you will, which the band has never really hit on before. Though somehow it fits and they manage to pull it off. You can really see Taylor’s influence in these songs.
“All Day Day Light,” contains a bit of an 80’s meets 60’s vibe to it. Take that for a leap of decades, right? It flows perfectly and trust me, it will not be leaving your head anytime soon. This is one to put on repeat. The album ends with the breezy “Stitches,” and “Sleeping In,” which appears to draw influences from the Beach Boys in the most flattering way.
Big Echo has launched The Morning Benders from small time indie band to full time buzz band. There is bound to be a lot more where that comes from so be on the lookout. If you haven’t checked out this record yet, do not hesitate. It has the makings to be an indie classic.

Robbers on High Street are a New York staple. Anyone who’s anyone knows the name. The Brooklyn band first hit the scene a few years ago with their debut album Tree City, and then with Grand Animals, that was released nearly 3 years ago.
Robbers are back in full action now, prepping a new album in which the name has not been released yet. The band has been playing new songs from the record since the Summer of last year, and when I talked to them last July, they seemed to be really excited to get started on it. The result that we’ve heard so far, seems to show a more mature side of the band and one that draws a bit more from their 70’s influences. This is going to be one of the lookout records for 2010.
Robbers on High Street have just released the first single from the record called “Electric Eye,” which seems to bring out the spirit of the new songs. Singer Ben Trokan’s voice is better than ever, envoking such passion, and doing it smoothly. Robbers on High Street are one of the greatest rock and roll bands of our generation, there is no doubt about that.
The single for “Electric Eye” will be released on vinyl tomorrow, with the digital single being released on June 22nd. The B-side will be another new tune titled “Face the Fog.”
In celebration of the new album, Robbers will be going out on a few dates this week in support of the new single. They’re bringing labelmates The Bloodsugars along with them. If you’re in New York, they’ll be playing the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on Saturday night. Don’t miss out on this show. It’s going to be incredible (like always!)

Javelin has been a band I’ve been following up on for a while now. They have always made amazing chill beats (I hate that I just used the word chill but it’s true) that I can pretty much throw on at anytime of the day. They’re usually lyric-less, and I feel that they provide the best background noise in the vein of J Dilla’s Donuts or pretty much any Thievery Corporation/ Air etc.
Seeing these guys live took it to a whole new level for me. I never
thought two white boys from Rhode Island could grove so good*. Melissa and I got to check them out at the Brooklyn Knitting Factory to a crowd of 2+ people. It was like at 12pm on a Friday during CMJ. Needless to say they still were full of energy, accompanied by 2 high stacks of boom boxes instead of amps, and a drum pad. It was pretty ridiculous when they started asking the four people there for request.
Still an amazing set. I was entertained.
As for the new album, No Mas (Luaka Bop) it is amazing. Well maybe it’s just something I’m buzzing on right now, but I think it may blow up pretty big. I couldn’t put it in a genre. Some songs (like intervales Theme) could have been a bonus track on Donuts. I mean these guys heavily sample, and may be just
as big record bin nerds as he was (rest in peace). The song “Dep”
reminds me of a funkier (cooler) MGMT track.There is a Russian pop song on here called “Moscow 1980”, and a Go Team- esque song that feature some phenomenal whistling called “Tell Me, What Will it Be?”.
The single off the album seems to be “Oh Centra,” which I think I prefer live. It does however feature hilarious helium vocals on the album, and is about Kangaroos I think.
That’s another spectacular thing about this album, the vocals. Although not overly complicated, certain song vocals have a very haunting sound to them. The fit perfectly, and I am super psyched that they started to create deeper, more dimensional songs then the early tracks we heard off the album like “Vibrationz” which is still a very good song. Songs I recommend, other than all of them, are “Off My Mind”, “We Ah Wi”, and “On It On It”. The latter which I predict will be heavily sampled in da’ clubs.

Surfer Blood. Ah. We can’t seem to get enough of them here at Modern Mystery, but really, who can? The band just finished up a ton of successful shows at SXSW and are still on their forever extensive tour that tickets are becoming harder and harder to get (Oh I’m having Vampire Weekend flashbacks all over again!).
We first met Surfer Blood at CMJ 2009. They were a little late for our interview, and quite frankily we weren’t even 100% sure what these boys looked like. From the back of a van we conducted their first interview EVER. Five bright eyed guys who said they were worried about getting one CMJ show and somehow ended up with nine. From the first moment we saw them live with a handful of people at Santo’s Party House, every CMJ show seemed to get bigger and bigger. It was only the beginning and we knew they were going to be huge.
Today in our system we came across the Surfer Blood Remix of “Swim,” (Alpaca Remix by Allen Blickle of Baroness) and remembered how rad it is. For your listening pleasure it’s down below.
