Getting Wild with Starpainter

Starpainter exists in the carved out spaces between rock, country, and pop. Their upcoming debut record is representative of a modern era of alt-country: a two-step here, a ballad there, a radio-worthy chorus in between. On this release, they have constructed a narrative of beauty, love, fear, and loss without seeming either too sweet or sorrowful.

The band recently released new single “Wild Azaleas” – a rhythmic roots-rock track with twangy guitars and nostalgic melodies.

Carmanah: One Note at a Time

Like the rainforests from which their name derives, the steady beat of the west coast can be found within the sound of Carmanah. With one album behind them and one ahead, Carmanah is crafting a musical niche of their very own, a vintage blend of the intuitive and the technical seamlessly woven together by Laura Mina Mitic’s soulfully luminous vocals. The band’s new single, “Best Interests,” lies somewhere among roots, rock, and blues with a driving melody and lush instrumentation.

Iris, their forthcoming album is a natural evolution and a moody counterpoint to their debut. Recorded between the wild forests of B.C. and the concrete high rises of Brooklyn, Iris is a heartfelt offering, a tapestry of thoughtful stories for our time. Undulating rhythms and bountiful instrumentation create a rich sonic backdrop for driving melodies and potent lyricism. The first track ‘Mountain Woman’ shows rousing vocals layered atop of propulsive rhythms, a joyful assertion of feminine energy and natural power. Lead single ‘As I See You’ is one of the gentler songs on the album, a sultry composition that speaks of friendship and holding up the people you love while valuing what they love in you. It’s a track that carries a compassionate message; “By embracing those who love us, within ourselves we can find a sense of home and belonging in our own skin”, says Mitic, “By caring for the environment around us, we also care for ourselves.”

Chris Ning Takes Us Back with “Dinosaurs”

Chris Ning’s new single, “Dinosaurs,” is a danceable, upbeat pop track juxtaposed with dark lyrics.

Chris Ning is an alternative pop artist from Mississauga/Toronto who has been singing, writing and performing for the last 15 years. He is recognized for powerful and raw vocal expression, which mixed with opera training at Western University has created a unique sound. He released his first album, “Losing My Faith” in 2007 with a single by the same name played on Canadian mainstream radio and featured in a television placement.

Chris shares of “Dinosaurs”:
“I really enjoy songs that have very serious subject matter hidden within a fun danceable atmosphere. I wanted to attempt to capture the vibe of Prince’s 1999. Our fun twisted take on it was hookup like it’s the end of the world. Then we started pitching pickup lines and they all pointed to something tragically wrong with our world. The theme ended up very dark and mix that against the juxtaposition of the dance beat, you end up with my best version of a coping mechanism within a song.”

Chris’ latest project is about codependency and the extreme outcomes and circumstances of being reliant on external influence. The album is about facing the demons that we all live with and saying that it’s okay to be lost or unsure: to give into a moment, and be unapologetically you.
