A Modern Mystery Holiday Party with Matt Pond
Welcome back to another installment of a Modern Mystery Holiday Party. We are nearing towards the end of our celebration, and we are glad to have with us Matt Pond, from the brilliant band, Matt Pond PA. This year the band treated their fans to a free Ep titled ‘The Freeep’ which you can download at their site, www.mattpondpa.com. You would be a fool not to snag a copy.
I’m not sure what Matt Pond PA’s final plans are for 2009, but I hope it involves a tour and a new full length. I think we have a good chance of seeing this happen. Matt was nice enough to share with us his Top Albums of the year and other words. Let’s raise our glass for more Matt Pond PA in the coming year!

The Best Thing that Happened to Me this Year
Going to Spain was the best thing that happened to me. I now have an unquenchable hankering to reconstruct that feeling in New York City.
The Strangest Thing that Happened to Me This Year’
Listening to the critters scratching at the roof of a cabin in Bearsville, NY this summer. It went on for weeks. So it was more of a prolonged strange thing than a specific happening. But I never got used to it. And no matter how much I can withstand in the wild, the seconds became hours while I imagined a million different creatures trying to get in and steal my guitars.
My Favorite Holiday Memory
Holidays and me do not always get along. I accept them as long as they can accept me.

A Modern Mystery Holiday Party with The Miniature Tigers
Yes, its another edition of the Modern Mystery Holiday party with today’s guests, The Miniature Tigers! This band became one of our favorites this year. Not only are they the nicest and funniest guys you’ll ever meet, but their music is astonishing. We haven’t heard indie pop as good as this in quite some time. The Miniature Tigers released their debut full length this year titled ‘Tell it to the Volcano’ which hasn’t left our record players yet. Charlie Brand and Daggrr shared their Top Albums with us amongst other things. There may be more Top Albums coming from other Mini Ts members, so stay tuned!

Charlie Brand’s Top 10 Albums of the Year
Department of Eagles – In Ear Park
Of Montreal – Skeletal Lamping
Beach House – Devotion
Alvin Band – Mantis Praying
Harry Nilsson – Nilsson Sings Newman
Grizzly Bear – Yellow House
Elvis Costello – Armed Forces
The Kinks – Entire Catalogue
Portisthead – Third
Van Dyke Parks – Song Cycle
The Best Thing that Happened to Me This Year
The best thing that happened to me this year was recording our album. That was a great deal of fun. That, and being able to come to new york was fantastic. San Francisco was amazing. Great year.
The strangest thing was probably that waitress. (Check out our Miniature Tigers CMJ Interview)
My Favorite Holiday Memory
One year my brother and I got a go kart for christmas. We took one lap around the block and by the time we got back to the top of the street, our neighbor was there telling our parents how dangerous they were. They returned it to the store later that day. I’m not sure why that’s my favorite memory. Maybe it’s not?
Daggrr’s Top 10 Albums of the Year
1. Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours
2. Beach House – Devotion
3. The Ruby Suns – Sea Lion
4. Atlas Sound – Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel
5. The Kooks – Konk
6. The Streets – Everything Is Borrowed
7. Late of the Pier – Fantasy Black Channel
8. David Byrne – Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
9. Princess Ladyfriend – History Time Travel Gig
10. Santogold – Santogold
The Best Thing that Happened to Me This Year
So many great things happened this year. I am very fortunate to have the life that I do. The most pivotal would have to be discovering Dzogchen, which is a form of Zen Buddhism. It has helped me so much with my day to day life and my constant pursuit to live without fear and see the world in the present moment.
The Strangest Thing that Happened to Me This Year
Being hired to play for Miniature Tigers. Those guys are weird.
My Favorite Holiday Memory
Miniature Tigers had a foosball match at The Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco right before a gig. Rick and I totally spanked Charlie and Lou in what can only be described as 8 rows of foos men, which are plastic, metal, wooden, or sometimes carbon-fibre figures mounted on horizontal metal bars. Each team of 1, 2, or 3 human players controls 4 rows of foos men. There is talk of a rematch but no dates have been confirmed.

A Modern Mystery Holiday Party with Kay Stanton of Casper and the Cookies
Christmas is approaching fast but our Holiday Party still has a few more days to go. Today’s guest at the Modern Mystery Holiday party is Kay Stanton from the incredible Casper and the Cookies!
Kay is one of my favorite women in rock and roll. Actually, she is my favorite. From making music to art, there is nothing this girl can’t do. Kay kindly shared with us her Top 10 Albums of the Year as well as a beautiful Christmas memory.
I can’t wait to hear Casper and the Cookies’ Modern Silence that is due out next month!

10. Deerhoof – Offend Maggie
Best Show:
Yo La Tengo @ The Melting Point, Athens, GA, 1/14/08
Best Thing that Happened to You This Year:
The best thing that happened to me this year was probably getting to do a small Japanese tour back in February with the Cookies. It was a pretty amazing trip, despite (or maybe because of) blizzards, small spaces, strange toilets, and crazy rides. We got to play shows in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Kyoto, squeezing in as much sightseeing and eating as possible.
Weirdest Thing that Happened to You This Year:
Weird stuff happens to me all the time, but I suppose the weirdest thing that’s happened to me recently was being bitten by my pet frog, Wayne (yes, he’s named after Wayne Coyne). I guess he mistook my fingers for lunch, latched on and wouldn’t let go. Wayne is an Argentina Horned frog (aka Pac Man frog) and he doesn’t have teeth, exactly, but he has a bony ridge that feels kind of like a series of razor blades. So, I would have been feeling like a fool with this large frog attached to my hand if I hadn’t been shocked by how much it freakin’ hurt. I got him to let go, and my hand was bleeding, and it felt like it was covered in extra sticky snot. Maybe I should do a remake of the Flaming Lips’ ‘Spiderbite Song,’ but call it the ‘Frogbite Song.’
Favorite Holiday Memory:
My favorite holiday memory is of hanging ornaments on my grandparents’ tree in Pennsylvania. I was probably only five or six, but I remember it being dusk outside, but I could still sort of see the snow glowing bluish (and that was a pretty amazing thing to a kid who was born in Georgia). The ornaments were these beautiful glass bells and baubles; some of them had the little starburst cut-outs that some ornaments have. It was warm, and I was with my sister, and the whole family. I’ve had lots of good ones, but that’s still gotta be my favorite.

A Modern Mystery Holiday Party with Jay Ferguson of Sloan
Welcome to another round of a Modern Mystery Holiday Party! Today we have Jay Ferguson, guitarist and vocalist of indie pop Gods, Sloan.
Okay, I personally was super excited when Jay agreed to do this for us. Sloan is one of my all time favorite bands. I have seen them so many times, I’ve actually lost count. Their harmonies are to die for and their melodies are always extremely catchy.
I could lilterally go on for days talking about Sloan’s greatness. This year Sloan released Parallel Play which of course, was jam packed with their signature sound. They will sure be one of our Top 10 Records of the year on here (which will be up next week).
Jay was kind enough to share with us his Top 10 Songs of 2008 and more. Here’s to more Sloan in 2009!

My Top 10 Songs of 2008
1. Jay Arner (of International Falls) – Undiscovered Sun
2. Solange – I Decided (Part 1)
3. Phoenix – Twenty-One One Zero
4. Will Currie & The Country French – Honest People
5. The Bicycles – Once Was Not Enough
6. MGMT – Electric Feel
7. Brent Randall & His Pinecones – Snowdrops
8. Jay Reatard – Always Wanting More
9. Pony Da Look – Wishstick
10. Last Shadow Puppets – Standing Next To Me
Best Thing and Strangest Thing that happened to me this year are probably one and the same:
A dinner with Johnny Marr discussing a wide range of topics including Family Guy and Keith Richards’ moves. A toppermost gentleman.
Fave Holiday Memory:
Any snowball fight circa 1976-78.

A Modern Mystery Holiday Party with Kevin Hilliard of Small Sins
Yes, we still have some more indie greats joining us at our little Modern Mystery Holiday party! Today sharing with us is Kevin Hilliard of the Small Sins!
Small Sins is one of our favorites over here, and we were lucky enough to see and meet Kevin during his New York tour stop with the great Sloan earlier this year. Kevin of course, had been doing his MRCH dj set as ‘Skip Lowe’ for the Sloan shows, which is by far amazing. He even played the Flashing Lights during his set!
Kevin was kind enough to share with us his Top Songs of the Year and other words of wisdom. We hope there is more Skip Lowe in ’09. Actually, we demand it!

My Top Songs of the Year
1. Dave Marsh – Backstreets (True Love Rules): The best album that you haven’t heard. Why are you still reading this and not buying it? Best lyric of the year: ‘Just another reason/get the fuck outta high school’. Davemarsh.ca
2. Weezer – Troublemaker: Best pop-rock number of the year. Almost negated by ‘Heart Songs’ the worst song Weezer have ever released and almost the worst song of all time.
3. Sloan – Not A Kid Anymore: If only because of the AMAZING clapping and ‘refrigerator thumping’ courtesy of yours truly.
4. Rivers Cuomo – Longtime Sunshine. Written many years ago (so not really from this year) but still a cool tune.
5. AC/DC – Rock ‘N’ Roll Train: I would swim through a river of flames to listen to JUST the amazing drum tracks of Phil Rudd. A true God amongst men. The worst title of all time.
6. Flight Of The Conchords – The Most Beautiful Girl In The Room: Saw the girl (‘Sally’) who played her on the TV show at The Troubadour in LA. H.O.T.T.
** Author’s note: This year only deserves a ‘Top 6′ because of the travesty that is ‘All Summer Long’ by Kid Rock. Holy Shit – this flaming turd hardly counts as a fuckin’ song! It’s like they put a monkey in a cage, threw in a MacBook with ProTools and the monkey shat out this ‘song’. Ring-tone rock! Strictly for ball-capped jocks/retards. You’d think it would take a lot to offend the late great Warren Zevon. Hasn’t he suffered enough? Rollin’ in his grave, the poor bastard.
Heaven help us – fuck you, music industry.
Best thing to happen this year
The birth of Skip Lowe. Google it, people.
Strangest thing to happen this year
The death of Skip Lowe: See it Here
Best Holiday Memory
The year I got the James Brown Box set. I knew Santa was funky, but that funky? He truly did have a brand new bag.

A Modern Mystery Holiday Party with Ahmed Gallab of Of Montreal and Caribou
Welcome to the second installment of our Modern Mystery Holiday Party!
Today we hear from Ahmed Gallab, drummer extraordinaire from of Montreal and Caribou. 2008 was a busy year for the band, including the release of the new album titled ‘Skeletal Lamping’ and an extensive worldwide tour.
Ahmed joined of Montreal this year primarily as their drummer but WOW, can he do so much more. He also spreads the love of pizza with all who come in his path. Ahmed seemed to have added more energy to the already super energetic of Montreal on stage. The Modern Mystery crew was more than excited when he agreed to answer our year end questions for us. We can’t wait to see more of Ahmed in 0f Montreal in 2009!

Ahmed Gallab’s Top 10 Records of the Year
10. Nigeria Rock Special: Psychedelic Afro-Rock & Fuzz Funk In 1970′s Nigeria
9. Nigeria Disco Funk Special: Sound of the Underground Lagos Dancefloor 1974-1979

7. Tussle – Cream Cuts

The Best Thing that Happened to Me This Year:
Tour, Tour, Tour!
I was probably the luckiest kid on Earth this year. I got to play in both Caribou and of Montreal! What an exciting thing to do! I have made so many friends and seen so much in such little time! Here’s to another year of touring!
The Strangest Thing that Happened to Me This Year:
Losing everything!
I lost my driver’s license, passport, phone (i eventually found it!), a hat, four toothbrushes and loads of other small things! it’s so weird!
My Favorite Holiday Memory:
My sisters and I would stay up and watch every single new years TV show and then run around our neighborhood banging pots and pans at midnight yelling “Happy New Year, DUDES!”. I always loved New Years Eve more than Christmas. It always had this freshness to it. Everyone is so excited to finish off one year and start a new one.
My New Years Resolution of 2009:
*Put out two Sinkane records!!! The follow up my last record, “Color Voice” , entitled “Sinkane”, will be released in March 2009 and I hope to record another record for a late 2009 release!
*Tour ALL THE TIME!!!
*Learn to surf!
of Montreal will be appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman Tonight, December 18th, at 11:35est Time. Ahmed and the band will be performing ‘An Eluardian Instance’. Be sure to catch it!
